Wireless PCI in Hardy Heron 8.04
 

SO ive decided to try wireless networking on the new ubnuntu but so far i am having big trouble getting my PCI network card to work, i need ndiswrapper to recognize wlan0 from boot be friendly with the wireless card,

Its not a wierd one or anything, just a linksys but it is really holding me back from having the full linux experience, im sort of new to this but not that much...

Someone help

which model Linksys card is it? i just bought a Linksys WMP54G and it works out of the box (no ndiswrapper necessary) i did have to use the network tool in the menu to configure it with the ESSID and WEP key and used static IP of 192.168.1.100 & default gateway of 192.168.1.1 (subnet 255.255.255.0) of course you will have to get the DNS from your router and add them to /etc/resolv.conf

I'm sorry let me clarify, its a broadcom bc4306 and I have the .sys driver for it, but I have build errors on ndiswrapper, so It won't install right, I have all the right build essentials I just can't get ndiswrapper to work as a command because it won't compile or install right

doesnt the Broadcom wifi card use the bcm43xx kernel module? modprobe bcm43xx (you might not need ndiswrapper)

yeah I would imagine it would be easier than it has been, how do I do that? just run the command?

as root or su or sudo /sbin/modprobe bcm43xx

If you can update by ethernet cable, that may solve your wireless NIC difficulty.

My BCM4306 got troubles when Hardy updated. 2 successive Hardy updates caused at least 3 problems, so I took quick cure, installed again. New installation worked fine until updates were finished. Computer complained during boot of need for BCM drivers. Update a few days later cured again without me making any effort to install drivers on any occasion.
Both computers have failures due to Hardy updates that are fixed in later updates, even though one is all Intel & other has no Intel parts.
Bottom line is development versions of Ubuntu (Kubuntu for me) have errors that may end within a week by another update or require repairs to clear. If you can update by ethernet cable, that may solve your wireless NIC difficulty.

Thank you for suggesting the update, and it did find the drivers, but then now it tells me it needs the firmware in order for the device to function...how do i do that?

Mine did that too then wanted to install more updates. Further update installation cured lack of firmware complaint & long slow boots. WIFI is good with internal BCM4306 and with external Hawking WIFI-USB unit.
Pre released updates & unsupported updates are not selected in Repositories of my 2 computers. All other repository options are selected. Maybe you need to add to range of updates selected to get past BCM WIFI problem? Have you fetched updates since first time?

yeah I did one update but its a pain to move my computer so it can get Ethernet so I'm gong to try again soon
