Wireless on Fedora Core 5, installed on Compaq Presario R3000

Hi,

I installed ndiswrapper manually on my lappy, running Fedora Core 5, and loaded the windows driver for my broadcom card.

Light for wireless comes on, and using the network config tool I set up to control networking through gnome I can see the same wireless ap's that I can see in XP.

But when I try to log on, nothing happens. I try logging onto my neighbours unsecured netowork, and nothing. I try logging onto my own secured network and nothing. I disable the firewall and nothing. I try doing it manually through the console and nothing.

Here's what's odd: iwconfig turns up nothing. iwconfig wlan0 shows my card. Trying to configure this through Gnome doesn't work, since FC5 seems to treat all networks as ETH0 ETH1, ETHn.

My guess? Maybe if I changed ndiswrapper to call wlan0 eth1? Someone wrote that they were able to do that, though I'm not sure how. Should I try a different driver? I'd read that my kernel might have trouble with some windows drivers, cuz of the stacks or some such, but I don't get any freezing so I don't think I have a problem with this. Maybe I can manually configure it, but I haven't found any FC5 specific notes on how to do that. Oh and when I try to login to a network it asks me for a WEP key, I give it, and it tries for about 10 seconds, then asks again. Do I need to add a second entry into my router? One for my linux config, and one for my windows? It's a dual boot system.

It's also not starting everytime I boot. I'm pretty sure I could figure this one out, but since it's not really working it hasn't been a concern. :P

I appreciate any help.

Best,

S.

From a fellow newbie, who has also struggled with ndiswrapper...

did you do:

# ndiswrapper -m

? (this is what puts the alias into /etc/modprobe.conf)

also, try
# route

you might need to:

# route add default gw xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx wlan0

(where xxx. etc is your router's IP)

If I understand you correctly, # ndiswrapper -l says: driver present, hardware present.
that's a good beginning.

Sorry I am not more familiar with FC's wireless setup tools.

wireless networking in fc5

i configured wireless network on my lappy (compaq presario v4122tu)
u need to be in gnome (it wont work in kde)
1)get the firmware (ipw2200-fw-2.4.tgz)
2)untar it and copy it to /lib/firmware
3)As a root: use the following commands..
#rmmod ipw2200
#modprobe ipw2200
#chkconfig --level 345 NetworkManager on
#chkconfig --level 345 NetworkManagerDispatcher on
#service NetworkManager start
#service NetworkManagerDispatcher start

an icon will appear on system tray

it will detect any network available

I have succesfully setup ndiswrapper on my Dell 710m laptop with Dell Wireless card running Fedora Core 5. However, I have experienced some problems with it as well. For example, after a reboot, it would not always connect to the wireless network. What I did was set up my IP, Subnet mask, and Default gateway manually. It all works now. Maybe this will help you as well.

Btw, I'm using Linsys BEFW11S4 router.
