Wireless not working - wlan0 missing

I completed a basic update using Ubuntu's update manager. Restarted and my wifi stopped working. Here's the output of things I've seen other people ask for (I've been looking and trying things for 2 days no to no avail). It has been working for months now until this one restart, so it's not an issue with the hardware.

Operating System: Ubuntu 11.04
Laptop: Asus U30JC

ifconfig
Code:

This message from your log:
Quote:
request for firmware file 'iwlwifi-1000-3.ucode' failed.
means that you have no firmware for your card. Just install package "linux-firmware" by:
Code:
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware
then, after reboot, check if wifi works. If not, repeat all ealier commands.

Seems as though I already have that installed - returns:
Code:
linux-firmware is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  liblzo2-2 libindicate-qt1 liblastfm0 projectm-data
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

Can you confirm that you have file "/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-1000-3.ucode"?

This is the return I get from an ls in that directory:

Code:
brandon@brandon-U30Jc:/lib/firmware$ ls
2.6.38-10-generic 2.6.38-10-generic-pae 2.6.38-11-generic 2.6.38-8-generic b43 hp
So it would seem that I do not have that file. However a quick "locate" command reveals -

Code:
brandon@brandon-U30Jc:/$ locate iwlwifi-1000-3.ucode
/lib/firmware-2.6.34/iwlwifi-1000-3.ucode
I'm not sure if this means I should relocate it or if it is okay there. Thanks again for the help - it is much appreciated.

Well I decided to just copy it to /lib/firmware and now it is working. I am now posting to you from wireless Thank you very much for your help! I'm not sure why the update manager moved those files there but now I'll know for future reference. Again, thank you!

Nice to hear that. I noticed that I also have directories with kernel version in /lib/firmware with the same contents, possibly this is some bug in Ubuntu.
