wireless NICs

I need all of your opinions on this. I have a wireless network at home, and it runs fine while running my windows machines, but my laptop is running Debian. I have a WPC54g wireless NIC for it, but there currently aren't any drivers for it for linux. I've been waiting for a long time to see if they will put any drivers out for it, but it doesn't look like they will have any soon for it.

I would like to buy a wireless NIC that does have drivers for linux. I would like a very compatible wireless pcmcia card, what card would you recommend? I have a linksys wireless Access Point.

Thanks

I would recomend the Orinoco or any card that uses that driver. Check out http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_...x/Orinoco.html

this driver has been around and supported from the 2.2 kernel and I've used it with great results.

I'm sorry, I know you recommended a orinoco type card - that's the driver that runs that card right? I'm having trouble figuring out which brands of wireless pcmcia cards run the orinoco driver. Is there a hardware list somewhere that shows a listing of brand names and models that use certain drivers?

OK, before I sink 50 bucks into a new wireless card... Do any of you think that there will be drivers for the 802.11g type pcmcia cards? I pumped almost 60 bucks into my 802.11g card and I feel really bad spending another on an older card. I think if I knew that there would be drivers out for my pcmcia card, I'd wait for them rather than purchase a new card.

Any one think they will be coming out with drivers for it?

Also, thank you SO MUCH for the brand name and model listing. If there aren't drivers coming out anytime soon, I may buy the linksys wpc11 card.

If you get the WPC11, get version 3 if you possibly can. There is at least one thread on LQ.org right now about how hard it is to get version 4 going. Version 3 uses the Prism 2 chip and the orinoco_cs driver, while it appears from the thread that version 4 uses a Realtek chip. I'm not sure what the problem with version 4 is -- it just seems to be hard. I have the WPC11 version 3 and it works flawlessly.

Here are some really great instructions on getting version 3 to work: http://www.involution.com/linksyswpc11v3.php

Assuming you get it going, here are some good instructions on getting WEP encryption working (for what it's worth): http://www.computing.net/linux/wwwbo...rum/11567.html
