I need all of your opinions on this. I have a wireless network at home, and it runs fine while running my windows machines, but my laptop is running Debian. I have a WPC54g wireless NIC for it, but there currently aren't any drivers for it for linux. I've been waiting for a long time to see if they will put any drivers out for it, but it doesn't look like they will have any soon for it.
I would like to buy a wireless NIC that does have drivers for linux. I would like a very compatible wireless pcmcia card, what card would you recommend? I have a linksys wireless Access Point.
I'm sorry, I know you recommended a orinoco type card - that's the driver that runs that card right? I'm having trouble figuring out which brands of wireless pcmcia cards run the orinoco driver. Is there a hardware list somewhere that shows a listing of brand names and models that use certain drivers?
Here's a list of cards the latest orinoco_cs driver (0.13e) will recognize out of the gate, although you can add others by modifying the hermes.conf file with information from the cardctl ident command:
# First class of device : Lucent & OEM
card "Orinoco or Intersil Prism 2 Wireless"
card "Lucent Technologies Wavelan/IEEE"
card "Avaya World Card"
card "Cabletron RoamAbout 802.11 DS"
card "ELSA AirLancer MC-11"
card "MELCO WLI-PCM-L11"
# Second class of device : Symbol & OEM
card "LA4111 Spectrum24 Wireless LAN PC Card"
card "3Com AirConnect"
card "Intel PRO/Wireless 2011"
card "Ericsson WLAN Card C11"
card "Nortel Networks e-mobility 802.11 Wireless LAN PC Card"
card "D-Link DWL-650H"
# Third class of device : other Intersil clones
card "Farallon SkyLINE"
card "D-Link DWL-650"
card "SAMSUNG 11Mbps WLAN Card"
card "HyperLink Wireless PC Card 11Mbps"
card "PROXIM LAN PC CARD HARMONY 80211B"
card "Linksys WPC11 11Mbps 802.11b WLAN Card"
card "Linksys WPC11 11Mbps 802.11b WLAN Card"
card "Linksys CompactFlash Wireless Card"
card "Tekram PCF-200"
card "ACTIONTEC PRISM Wireless LAN PC Card"
card "Zcomax XI-325HP"
card "Microsoft Wireless Notebook Adapter MN-520 1.0.3"
card "Linksys WPC11 Version 3"
card "Netgear MA401RA"
OK, before I sink 50 bucks into a new wireless card... Do any of you think that there will be drivers for the 802.11g type pcmcia cards? I pumped almost 60 bucks into my 802.11g card and I feel really bad spending another on an older card. I think if I knew that there would be drivers out for my pcmcia card, I'd wait for them rather than purchase a new card.
Any one think they will be coming out with drivers for it?
Also, thank you SO MUCH for the brand name and model listing. If there aren't drivers coming out anytime soon, I may buy the linksys wpc11 card.
If you get the WPC11, get version 3 if you possibly can. There is at least one thread on LQ.org right now about how hard it is to get version 4 going. Version 3 uses the Prism 2 chip and the orinoco_cs driver, while it appears from the thread that version 4 uses a Realtek chip. I'm not sure what the problem with version 4 is -- it just seems to be hard. I have the WPC11 version 3 and it works flawlessly.
