Wireless networking problem

Hi, Ive got a bit of an issue with my home wireless set-up. I recently bought a wireless router for everyone in the house to use. We were using DHCP (not a good idea I know) but anyway it worked. Now my next door neighbour has gone and bought one and is also using DHCP, and I can pick-up packets from his connection in my room. So my quesiton is...

How can I ensure that when I use ifup I always obtain an ip from my router and not his? Also, if I stop using DHCP on mine and let everyone assign their own static addresses, what command can I use to check whether an ip address is in use? Is there any way to ensure I associate with a specific SSID?

I am using SUSE 9.1. If anyone could answer this or point me to a tutorial I would be extremely grateful. Thankyou.
