wireless legality question

HI !

I will try to be as quick and objective as possible :

In my country the communications sector have been privatized (one of IMF International monetary fund must do in order to get economic help) , well the ones that bought the national telecommunications are charging a whole lot of money for everything (mobile phone , internet, telephone, etc...) .
I was told that they have a contract over the next 35 years that gives them monopoly in the telecommunications business and that you cannot give wireless acess to anybody else.

What i wanted to ask is :

- Wireless broadcast is illegal or what ?

Can anybody comment ? thanks

Depends what you mean by wireless.

Wireless as in phones - probably control either by the government or the purchassers of the licensed spectra.

Wireless as in WLAN - can't speak for Brazil, but in the US the FCC has provided 2.4 GHz (and 5 Ghz for 802.11a, and 900Mhz for portable phones) as an unlicensed band, which means home WLAN's can use it freely as long as they dont interfere with other spectra

fatman i guess and hope you´re right , these dudes are really something , they charge like hell down here , and now they claim you cannot make a wlan unless they charge you . well i had a project, since being online costs a fortune, to be abble to create a wlan where i live and save myself and everybody else around some money . I could still do it but... maybe is not nice, and plus i was told that they can track the signal and a lot of other bull.

thanks a lot
