Wireless issues - (Help convert this Windows user, please!)

Hello all.

The only thing preventing me from converting fully to Linux is I cannot seem to get my wlan card to work properly.

Based on advice from a friend I am evaluating the 30 day trial version of linuxant drverloader (linuxant.com). Also, I have a Belkin F5D7010 PCMCIA card and it works well under Windows.

In Linux (SuSe 10.1) I have installed the rpm for linuxant and installed the drivers as per the instructions. I have also entered my temporary license # and according to the web page everything is OK.

Next I went into yast and set up my network and WEP information.

I'm at a loss as to what I must do next. My browser (firefox) isn't working and I don't know enough about Linux to know where to begin troubleshooting.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You probably just need an IP address - the Windows equivalent would be ipconfig /renew.

There's a SuSE GUI tool for this, I'm sure, but from a command line:

iwconfig
This will list the interfaces and show the status of any wireless interfaces.
ifup eth0 or wlan0 or whatever the interface is.

If it's any consolation, the wireless configuration is generally the most troublesome part of Linux setup. Maybe someday Linux drivers will be more readily available for wireless, but right now, it's a messy business.

Can you run iwconfig and post the output?

Thanks to every for the replies and helping me solve this one. I am looking forward to getting this completed so I can finally dump Windows.

Here is the output of iwconfig:

Quote:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"" Nickname:"unknown"
Mode:Managed Bit Rate=54 Mb/s
RTS thr=2346 B Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
I noticed that it appears the ESSID is blank, however it displays properly when I view it in YaST. odd.

Try setting a static ip address for the card. A good bet would be to copy the settings from windows. In windows, when you have the wireless working, note the ip address, gateway address, and dns addresses. Then in linux, try

#iwconfig wlan0 essid youressid

#ifconfig wlan0 <ip>
where <ip> is the ip that you got from windows. if that works, then

#route add default gw <gwip>
where <gwip> is the address of the gateway. then try

#ping <gwip>

and see if you get anything. If it works up to this point, then you can either set up the card to use a static ip in yast, or you could try to use dhcp. The first step might be useful, i have to do it every time i connect to my home network, but that could be because i don't broadcast my ssid. Good luck!

Incredible, I am online!

Thank you so much for the help!

However, I still have one issue.

I set up YaST to use a static IP (it is not a problem if I leave this way) however, it seems that about every 5 - 10 minutes firefox is no longer connected to the net and everything times out. I open YaST, edit my wireless network card, but do not change anything, save it, and everything works again.
