Wireless Internet with Interl 2200BG on Fedora Core4

Hi,
I'm rather new to linux, and just installed Fedora Core 4, and like many others had trouble with wireless internet.
I'm using an Intel 2200BG card, and went through all the steps of installing the latest drivers and all that. I follow some other methods that involved using ndiswrapper and went through them step by step receiving all positive outcomes. My end result is that when i type iwconfig or iwlist everything shows up properly, all the right settings are set, and an ifup activates the card and its all good. Even through the GUI, using desktop->system settings->network i've set everything up and activated the wireless card, and it was fine. The wifimanager shows the card with proper bandwidth, signal strength varies from about 75-100% and everything i can posibly think of says that my card is set up properly.

However, when i try to load any webpages, it acts like theres no connection and nothing happens.
If anyone could shed some light on my problem it would be much appreciated...
Thanks in advance.

Hi Makaveli,

your problems sounds like a DNS problem. You have to add in minimum one DNS IP Address under desktop->system settings
->network.

when you open an terminal/console and If you can ping an IP address like "ping 141.1.1.1" and you see a connection with number of bytes send/received ... , this means that you have IP connectivity to the internet. But it doesn't mean that you can open any http pages because your PC must first ask a DNS to resolve the name to an IP address.

Your PC can not find the DNS to resolve pages like www.yahoo.com or pages like that. Do try to add your DNS you are using in desktop->system settings->network and it will work.

I hope I could help you.

Cheers, Massood

hi thank you for the reply

i tried your suggestion, but when i try to ping a web adress, like google at 72.14.207.104, i get "host is unreachable"...
furthermore i noticed that when i activate my wireless card in desktop->settings->network, it says "SET failed on device... Operation not suported"
but it still activates the card...just wondering if that might be the problem?

Hi Makaveli,

let us think from scratch.

You have to check if your PC has load the module ipw2200. You can do it manually by using the command "modprobe ipw2200". Please check your modprobe config file under "/etc/modprobe.conf". Threre, you can see which modules will be loaded. To check which devices are loaded, you can type "lspci" con the console. Than you have to check if all ieee80211 modules are loaded. You can do it easily when you go to that folder where you have installed ipw2200 and you have to invoke the load file with "./load". It loads automatically the ieee80211 modules. Than type "ifconfig" and you have to see eth1 if eth1 is your wireless interface. Please check on which channel eth1 is listening to your wireless LAN router. Normally, it must be channel 11 and not channel 1. Did you include the IP addresses of you DNS server in your LAPTOP unde menu->desktop->settings->network? It is important. after these entries, you must be able to ping 141.1.1.1. Do try it and I hope it will work. Otherwise, I will make some snapshots of my configurations and I will forward them to you.

Last thing: after doing this sequetially, try first to ping your router first. It is important to have connectivity first to your router.

I hope I could help.

Cheers, Massood

after typing lspci there shows
Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG (rev 5)
The modprobe.conf shows my device listed in the Alias part...
my channel is 6 and its been set, and i've set the dns/gateway/ip/mask..
the device shows as loaded, and is dev14809 instead of eth1
attempts at pinging my router failed.
i installed the ipw2200 in the /lib/firmware directory and typing ./load gave me a no suhc file or directory
upon typing ifconfig, i noticed something odd..
RX packets:120 errors:2469 dropped 2533
TX packets:21 errors:0 dropped:0
and the errors and dropped numbers keep increasing with time
from the output of incofing, theres also a "lo" device that says "Link encap:Local Loopback"...and i dont really know where that came from...

okay.....as im typing this everything just started working....hahah i dont know what just happend...but thank you very much!!!
ahah i think imma be back on this forum soon thoguh cuz i ahve no idea why it wuold jsut start working...haha
the help is much appreaciated

Hi Makaveli,

normally it takes time a while to connect your network. Normally you can write a script to automate all steps which have to be done.

Have big fun with FC4 and Linux.

Cheers, Massood
