Wireless extensions have disappeared in transition from kernel 4.3.3 to 4.4

I tried to make a wireless connection for the first time in a few months. iwconfig reported 'no wireless extensions' for wlan1 (which appears in /proc/net/dev). I booted into kernel 4.3.3 and it worked. The same modules have been built and loaded for both kernels. I tried all my other wireless adaptors (the first was builtin; the others are USB; they all have different chips): they behave the same.

Must I build something new to make wireless work in kernel 4.4?

iwconfig stopped working with kernel 4.4. I can connect with iw . I didn't get the memo.
