wireless ethernet bridge to various Hotspots?

Holding my laptop in the air for hours on end to get a usable signal is getting too painful. So i've bought a linksys wga54g game adapter/bridge too put on the windowledge. My problem is understanding how i will operate it when i come to a new hotspot.I can talk to the bridge ok when i have fixed ip addreses and apparently need to do this so i can select the network to talk to,but then i will need to switch the laptop to dhcp to get the hotspots' ip.
Or can the laptop's ethernet adapter have two ip addresses one fixed and one assigned by dhcp?Or is there some utility i don't know about to deal with this situation?
TIA.
