Wireless card works but nic does not?

I am running slackware on a toshiba laptop. I normally hook up to a wireless network. My wireless pc card works great. Today, however, I hooked a cat5 into my laptops built in nic and i am unable to get on the network.

when i dual boot into winbloze, i can see the network so i know the built-in nic works fine.

can someone give me some suggestions? if you need an ifconfig, i will need to do it tomorrow when i get to work, since that is where i hook into the cat5.
