wireless card problem ?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hi all,

I'm new to linux, just started 2 days ago lol so be patient

I downloaded Knoppix live-cd and started up my Compaq R3000 laptop. It booted and everything went well but i noticed the little blue light for the wireless card on the side of the computer wasn't turned on.

I pressed on the button but it would still not light up. I tryed this command in shell console : " ifconfig eth0 up" to initialise the card and gave me an error, something like "denied"

I downloaded the latest broadcom 54g 802.11g driver to install it but still didn't work ??

I wonder what i'm doing wrong ?? If someone could give me a hint i would appreciate.

Thanks in advance.

What steps did you actually take to install the wireless driver - using ndiswrapper? That should be the way to go with that chipset (if you're sure that's the chipset in your laptop). I've never tried Knoppix with that chipset so don't know if it's supported straight off the CD live, but I guess since it's not activated by default

Maybe let us know what steps you took and what problems you're encountering. The ndiswrapper wiki is a good resource for getting things up and running. As a shot in the dark, a common problem is not having the appropriate kernel sources available when compiling ndiswrapper and thus your wireless driver cannot be installed.

Yes that is exactly the command i used: ndiswrapper. I read it in the forum and followed the indications.

Unfortunately I can't remember the error it gave me because i'm at work now (working really hard lol)

But i'm pretty sure my chipset is supported by Linux because my laptop is a pretty standard laptop bought at staples.

How can i make sure i have the appropriate kernel sources ???

ok here's what id did:

-boot with Knoppix Live Cd (Windows xp installed on computer)
-copied the windows driver (found on compaq's web site) to my USB memory stick
-open shell Konsole
-use ndiswrapper to install driver
-received error message

p.s. where does the driver install itself since i booted from live cd. I don't think i writes it to the hard drive since windows is installed ???

i'm kinda lost in this Linux universe.

Anyone can help me ?

Hi,

Simple question? What was the error that you got? I'm not in front of your computer and my crystal ball cracked therefore the image is fuzzy.

First quess; When you opened a terminal did you get root?

ok, when i typed ndiswrapped eth0 up. I got Acces denied.

and for the root i'm not quite sure what that means (I discovered Linus 4 days ago) but I suppose it's equivalent to the directory like in command prompt:

it said something like Knoppix@root2... something like that. I think it's the live cd's directory.

Anyways i'll try to do a copy paste of the shell Konsole and all the error i received.

P.s. can i copy the text in a text editor like notepad and read it in windows ??

thanks for any help

I think as the default in Knoppix, you don't have root privileges (this is like the system administrator in Windows). I believe under the Knoppix menu there is a command to set root password. I believe you will have to logged in as root, or with root privileges to configure ndiswrapper. You should be able to just set a password for root and then retry configuring ndiswrapper.

Welcome to Linux - you will find that wireless networking is one of the more "interesting" parts of the setup.

If possible, I'd plug into a wired Ethernet connection for a while just to work out other issues before trying to tackle the wireless interface.

Thanks for the info.

I will try that tonight. I have a good feeling it will work because that's what the error was. Acces denied.

I'm slowly starting to adapt to the Linux environment thanks to Linuxquestions.org Lot's of fun
