wireless card connected, but no internet


Running a toshiba laptop w/ intel wireless 2100 card
Slack 10.2
2.6.15.3 kernel

I have installed the latest 2100 drivers, and along with that their recomendations of the latest ieee80211, and firmware.

All things have been installed with no errors.

Originally when i would use kwifiManager, it would show me connected to my network ssid, with a full strength signal, but no ip address.

looking through other threads is saw the recomendation to set the ip address myself to make sure it works, then worry about DHCP after.

So i used the following to set my address. This is the same address my laptop has always used when XP boots.
ifconfig eth1 192.168.2.170
This worked, and now my ip does show 192.168.2.170

But still no internet. When I run firefox or Konquer i basically get the server not found message.

I have used the ping command, to ping my desktop PC, and wireless router, and get results back.

I know it is probably a small setting I am forgeting.. any suggestions???

another little tidbit

if I enter

in my browser it takes mr to my routers login screen. So I am connected to my network. The internet does work when I boot to XP, and obviously on my desktop, as this is where I am posting from

check your default gateway
it should be your router

I set the default gateway myself in rc.inet1.conf

i ran route -n again
this time I manually set my IP address again as 192.168.2.170
it added this line

I notice my Gateway is O.O.O.O
yet I have set it as 192.168.2.1 in rc.inet1.conf

This must be the problem

hi, i think i had the same problem until a few minutes ago. have you checked your name server yet?
i had to set it to the ip-address of my router and now i have an internet connection with linux as well as windows.

there is a button "wireless connection" on the panel at the top of my desktop which opens a menu where i chose "configure network settings". i was asked for the root password and then there is a "network card configuration overview" where i chose my wireless card and "edit" and then there was a button "host name and name server".

since i'm total newbie to linux i don't know if it makes any difference that my distribution is suse10.0 and that i'm using gnome. but there's got to be someone on here who really knows what i was doing...

vi /etc/resolv.conf
put a line:

seems i solved it by adding

dhcpcd eth1 new

into the script line of my config setup menu.

I just have to hit activate everytime i log into kde and want wi-fi

better then nothing for now.
