Finegan,

Which part in particular would you like out of messages?

Thanks

Andy

Unsupported Card... that doesn't make sense, the puppy looks like it loaded, orinoco_cs isn't listed under "/sbin/lsmod"?

Cheers,

Then I think you're fine... one beep is a little odd, but they can't get loaded if they don't get bound... Does:

iwconfig

List something with wireless extensions?

Finegan,

iwconfig reports 'no wireless extensions'.

I do get the feeling that I've neglected to do something quite important somewhere down the line. What should I have done up to now?

Cheers,

Andy

I don't get it... the modules are loaded, orinoco_cs is unused... the log is solid, dmesg has got the modules loading... the rest of the orinoco device scan is in there right? with the firmware version mentioned and such?

iwconfig used to have a bug where it didn't report extensions until the card was ifconfiged up... there's no other network card loaded so the MA401 should have gotten eth0...

ifconfig eth0 up

Does that kick errors?

Cheers,

Finegan

Okay, then it didn't load... what in the heck, there's virtually no way the modules can be loaded but not bound to the card unless you modprobed them by hand. I guess there's something I missed with the logs... is there more in either dmesg or /var/log/messages?

Cheers,

Looking at the log from when I last restarted:

insmod: Warning: ignoring irq=10, no such parameter in this module
insmod: Module orinoco_cs loaded, with warnings
dhclient: Bind socket to interface: No such device

Cheers,

Andy

Question NETGEAR MA401RA

Originally, I had been confused by lack of documentation on NETGEAR's part, and thought I had a MA401. Thus I configured all the proper drivers (i.e. hermes + wvlan + prism2_cs) before figuring out I have an MA401RA. Now I need to switch the association to orinoco_cs. The /etc/pcmcia/config file has the correct association, so that's not the source of the problem. Also, I downloaded the hermes.conf file that is supposed to configure hermes for the orinoco driver.

Finegan, you're probably annoyed by the number of newbies bugging you about this issue, but this page shows up very high in the Google/Linux listing for MA401RA. So lots of people have been directed here.

Anyways, thanks in advance for your help.

Psi,

Did you read the entire thread? In the beginning there's what to put in you pcmcia.conf. But here's what I did:

I created a file: /etc/pcmcia/netgear.conf
and put in there:

card "NETGEAR MA401RA Wireless PC"
manfid 0x000b, 0x7300
bind "orinoco_cs"

I added a line to /etc/modules.conf:

alias eth0 orinoco_cs

I rebooted the machine, and it came up perfectly.... Remember to start with WEP of , and an open system.. If that works, then tighten your network.....

I wouldn't usually revive such an old thread, but I wanted to thank all the posters and also post my steps for getting the MA401RA working on Fedora Core 4:

ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth1 up
iwconfig eth1 essid "whatever"
iwconfig eth1 enc 123456789
dhclient eth1

Cheers!
