Wired interface priority over wireless in Debian
 

Hi,

I have both wired and wireless inteface in my laptop. I would like to set network in a way to use wired interface every time wired network is available (1Gb/s speed vs 11 Mb/s). What is more I don't want wireless interface to come up if wired is set up.

Is there any way to set it up using ifplugd or laptop-net?

what do you mean by 'when wired is availible'?

Hi,

Sometimes I put the laptop on the desk and plug in the network cable. This is the sitation when wired network is available. Actually then both wired and wireless networks are available.

When I turn on laptop without plugging in the network cable only the wireless is available. This was my question.

It seems that ifmetric sounds to be good solution of this problem

why do u worry if both come up .... ? both devices are up because of theri modules being inserted in kernel ..
has their been any specific problem u faced .. due to both networks ? u can separately configure both ur networks ... and use what u want to ?
can u be more specific ?

i looked at ifmetric .. u can do this with ifconfig too

ifconfig wlan0 metric 1

and so on ..

I have a possibly related question. My laptop is used similarly, sometimes with the ethernet plugged, sometimes not.

When the ethernet is NOT plugged in the boot process spends a LOT of time looking for it before proceeding on to connect to the wireless. Is there a way to tell Debian to skip over that search more quickly.

Even a keystroke that would tell the boot process to skip to the next instruction would be suitable.
