Wifi password problem netgear acer aspire one

I have just bought the acer aspire one netbook and am trying to connect to my netgear wireless router.I enter the ssid code and the wpa passphrase and it locates the network but fails to connect. When I go back to the connection manager I find the passphrase key that i previously entered has changed from the 10 character password to a much longer one( I'm not sure what as the characters all appear as stars). This happens every time.
Does anyone know of a solution to this?
Thanks in advance

The password you entered gets turn into a "key." It's like a more encrypted version of what you previously typed in.
Your problem is more than likely driver, router, and/or distro related.
