Wifi Hot spots & Slackware 9.1
 

Hello,

I have Slackware installed on my laptop (dual boot windows xp pro), I use it at work, since I am in midtown manhattan there are lots of wifi spots, through windows I have no problem connecting to one, but how do I configure slackware to connect to one of these wifi networks?

I have slackware 9.1 on a Fujitsu S series lifebook, an Atheros AR5001X wireless network adapter (G), I searched on google but can't seem to find anything specific in regards to this network card, or how to simply logon to those available networks..

For operation the card, you'll need the MadWiFi driver. There are many threads on it, how to install it, etc.

Once the card is operational, you associate with the wireless networks using wireless tools (iwconfig).

ex: iwconfig eth0 essid tmobile

iwlist eth0 scan will show available networks

There are GUI front-ends to wireless tools that will let you connect with pointy-clicky stuff. KWiFiManager, a KDE application, is probably the best-known of them.

On another note, you really should upgrade to a newer version of Slack. A lot has happened since 9.1. Enjoy.
