Why won't the wlan0 interface appear in Ubuntu Linux?

I've downloaded extracted, compiled and installed the drivers that come in zd1211-driver-r83.tgz for the zd1211 chipset. After I've compiled the drivers I'd expect the wlan0 interface to show in the networking program (Administration tools) but it doesn't. All I see is a wireless option and beneath that it says "The device has not been configured." I'm finding it strange because in 6.06 of Ubuntu I never used to get this problem at all. Please can anyone help? All answers appreciated.

I googled for an answer. I would guess that either you don't have the module modprobed, or one of the modules that it is dependent on.

Another possibility is that you need an alias command in /etc/modprobe.conf or in a /etc/modprobe.d/zd1211rw file.

Also, just for shoot and holler, you could try running "depmod -a"
