which wireless card should i buy?
 

I am about to go buy a wireless card today (or soon) but I've heard alot about certain cards not working.... what cards do you suggest I get?

I am using Redhat Fedora Core. I am using the linux 2.4 kernel.

I tried using a linksys card but I couldn't get it to work, and I need to buy a wirelss card for my mother's computer (she uses windows XP) and I know that my linksys card will work on it, so I need to know what wireless card I should get besides linksys.

from personal experience,
802.11 b - lucent wavelan ( orinoco-based card - should work right out of the box)
802.11g - netgear wg511 (prismgt - based - will need to patch and configure kernel)

Alright, thankyou. Iwas really disappointed when I found out that my old card didnt work. I just started using linux on my own machine thursday night.

i've seen many linksys' working. i think most old cards should be supported - so maybe you wanna just try getting that one to work than a new one?

its one of the new cisco ones (2.4 or something). But, I figure that I need to buy another wireless card anyway, i might was well buy one that will work on my machine, then i can put the linsys ones of my mother's computer.i know a way in which i could get the linksys one to work, but i'd need to download the newest source and recompile or something like that, but since my mom's machine doesn't ahve a cd burner, i cn't copy 40mbs of stuff on a floppy. :/

oh, i forgot to mention that the netgear one isn't an option cause im not using it on a notebook.

u confused me now. u want a wireless card for a laptop right? so ... ?

arg. i need a pci card. for a desktop computer. My house doesn't have a prebuilt network and my stepfather doesn't want cords everywhere, so I have to use wireless.

It is highly recommended that you use only a single brand for all your wireless needs. So you need to settle in on a brand, and don't mix it with other brands. Many of them, in spite of standards, won't work with their competitors brands. By doing that, it should save you a lot of grief.
