Well, this is solved, and I am (as usual) humbled. The stock kernel fixed it.

Why it fixed it is the next mystery. What kernel option could iwconfig need that the wifi doesn't?

You have a connection, so driver for the wireless adaptor is working. Something in network support is missing would be my guess.

Yeah, I have both kernels installed, and intend to go through the networking/wifi bit of the 2 configs together.
