what wireless card do you have working without ndiswrapper?

I think my wireless card has flaked out on me.....so I'm in the market for a new card.

What wireless card do you have working without ndiswrapper?

Did you have to do any special work to get it working?

What distribution do you have it working under?

Have you tried using it with Slackware 10.1?

Thanks for your help!

Cisco 352.

Works with kernel drivers, uses iwconfig to configure. Not tried it in Slack, but since its drivers are in the vanilla kernel, and iwconfig is a standard tool, I doubt there'll be any problems.

proxim orinoco silver
Linksys WPC11 version 3 (v 4 does NOT work with kernel drivers)

Both working fine on Slack 10.1 using orinoco kernel modules.

I know this isn't what you asked - but I get the best performance from a motorola wng825G card using ndiswrapper and the broadcom drivers. Better range, stronger signals, and longer battery life from the machine. Yes it 'taints' the kernel with non open source driver modules, but I can't argue with better results.

Similar to the above post.

Slackware 10.1.

ORiNOCO Silver & Gold, ZyXEL B-101 (Zcomax), ZyXEL B-100 (WPC11 v3) and a Dell Broadcom B/G mini-PCI with ndiswrapper (installed first try, works fine).

The only special things I've done are to patch the orinoco_cs driver for Kismet and install XSupplicant and certificates for 802.1x authentication with a FreeRADIUS server.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I've just purchased a WPC11 Ver. 3 off Ebay, so now I'm eagerly awaiting it's arrival.

I Used Fedora Core 1 on a gateway model 3018 laptop. the Cisco aironet 350 card is recognized immediately during the installation. The activity LED's blink during the early phases of the Fedora install. The card is automatically recognized without any configuration, although watching the BIOS you may see "eth1 not found, therefore initialization will not occur" The BIOS then states that wifi eth1 found! After the initial logon to Fedora, running iwconfig will show your SSID of your access point, and it should automatically pick up an address via dhcp, either from your dhcp server or from the wireless router/access point. Fedora 1 and Redhat v. 7.1 and 7.2 contain the aero_cs driver in the kernel. No kernal compilation should be necessary using these distros. I have tried this card on 3 different model laptops and the card is auto-recognized. You may also want to disable your wired ethernet card from initializing during bootup so the system doesn't hang.

I have stated in a previous post that a cisco aeronet 350 card is auto recognized during the anaconda installer process. It will work with Fedora 1 and Fedora 3. If you see the led's blinking during the install process, then the card will work right after the initial logon. If not, then go to the cisco website and download the aero _cs drivers. Their documentation is excellent. They will explain how to make the loadable kernel module. Once the card is working, you can use iwconfig for additional configuration i.e. WEP authentication.

Also, try suse linux 9.3 It has a GUI hardware manager called Yast. It will detect the card and load the necessary kernel modules for you. Yast can autodetect many wireless card models, but I have found the most success with the aeronet 350 card.

Good Luck!
