How far away is it from the hub and how many computers connect simultaneously?

Does the number of connections vary over time?

I'm about 3 feet away from the hub and only have my laptop and my phone connected to it.

No

Sometimes though I go into another room in my apartment which is about 15-12 feet away

I don't know what's going on, but I have some trouble-shooting ideas.

Boot to a Live CD of something else, preferably not a *buntu, and test whether the issue occurs with it. Also test with another computer if you have one or can persuade a friend to help you. This may help you narrow the list of suspects.

I tried it with Manjaro (Arch Distro) and got the same problem, plus my phone(Android Nougat) is always connected at full strength

How old is the computer and what wireless chipset is in it?

It sounds to me like it might be some freaky hardware issue with the computer, the wireless card, or its antenna, but that is based only on the process of elimination and not on any particular technical hardware expertise on my part.

Hopefully someone with more hardware knowledge than I will check into this thread.

I think the laptop is about 2.5 years old, I don't know what chipset it is but I do know that Pop is using rtl8723bs as a driver for whatever it may be. The strange thing is I've tried it out on other hubs and the max I got for connection strength was 63% solid, I don't know what type of hub that was though.

Thanks for your help anyways Frank

You can find out the wireless chipset by running the command lspci (list pci devices) in a terminal. You may have to run the command as root.

Sorry I haven't been able to help more.

Updated kernel

I updated the kernel to 4.20.3 and its helped resolve the problem somewhat, it jumped from 33% to 75% strength, maybe the 5.0 kernel will help even more

I've updated to kernel 4.20.4 no difference and the speedtest.net throughput is not even close to my phone running at 16.5Mbps vs 11-13Mbps on the laptop

No difference with kernel 4.20.5, same speedtest results and connection strength
