unable to find network interface (ipw3945)

I have just installed Mandriva Spring 2007 Free DVD on an HP nx6310

It did not automatically install the wireless network card so i'm trying to do so.

I installed:

ieee80211-1.2.18
ipw3945-1.2.0
ipw3945-ucode-1.14.2
ipw3945d-1.7.22

as suggested in a previous post: Intel PRO Wireless 3945ABG: Help!

all worked fine till now.

I could not find the Load command for: ./load debug=0

From the MCC drakconnect returns "unable to find network interface for selected device (using ipw3945 driver).

I also tried using an ndswrapper but a similar message appeared.

on going to /bin and running ipw3945d-start the same message returns

I guess its the ieee80211 subsystem

modprobe ieee80211 returns:

FATAL: Error inserting ieee80211 (/lib/modules/2.6.17-13mdv/net/ieee80211/ieee80211.ko): Unknown symbol in module.

I'll be trying to reinstall the ieee80211 module but if anyone help i'd be glad.

Succeeded in installing ieee80211. had to REBOOT after installing the module. Now MCC recognises the interface and it is a question of settings!

Thanks
Walter

PS. I am relatively new to Linux

What sort of security are you using?

What's the output of ifconfig? ... of iwconfig?

Thanks for posting, the output of ifconfig is:

iwconfig returns:

Now Mandriva recognises the wireless network card and also the wireless network when it is available, but i cannot connect to it. On doing so it hangs.

Currently I am out of range of the wireless network. When I boot without eth0 connected the system hangs and does not make it through to the login. It also stops for a long while trying to find the IP settings only to return ...[Failed].

Any ideas?
thanks
walter

eth0 is your wired Ethernet. If it's not connected, the system should ignore it and boot fine. I don't know where it is in Mandriva, but there should be a time-out setting for pulling an IP address that will at least let the thing skip over eth0 in a reasonable time. Someone more knowledgeable about it can probably help you set it to bypass the wired if not in use.

eth2 seems to the ipw3945, but it's not associated with the network. Have you tried using iwconfig to set the wireless parameters manually? If so, what happens? Are you using WEP or WPA? If WPA, is wpa_supplicant installed?
