Please tell us about some of your system basics:
PC, MAC, or ?
Dual booting
Is this an initial install
What OS's and edition.
Know what ethernet card?
Have you tried a modem?
Are you in the USA ?

Using Ubuntu 5.10, successfully used wireless with Warty Warthog version, no luck with Hoary Hedgehog.

I found several posts here on LQ that may point you to a general problem with the 5160. Search here for "Mandrake 10.1 official and dell inspiron 5160" and see if you can gleam some info from those quoted URLs in the second post.

I've historically stayed away from note books and linux. Seems that they (note books) are different creachers for sure.

I am having the same problem. My wireless was workingfor about 2 weeks on multiple networks, and one day it decided to stop working.

When I put the card in, the power light turns on for a few seconds, but then both the power light and activity lights go dim.

What is really weird is that I can still see my network even though the lights are dim like the card is not active:

My driver is correctly loaded with ndiswrapper:

If eth0 is disabled and wlan0 is enabled, I am still not getting a connection.

I recently upgraded the linux kernel, could this be the problem? I do not know how to recompile ndiswrapper.

I deleted it, but what would you suggest doing right after deleting it? It doesn't seem to work if I do ifup wlan0.

How do I go about rerunning my wlan0 scripts and associating wlan0 with my essid?

Ok, that is fine. We all start somewhere.

I will give you a brief synopsis of the steps involved in getting a wireless connection working in linux, as well as commands needed to do this manually....

1. You must install the wireless card driver, and insert it into the running kernel:

# modprobe ndiswrapper
Following your post, it seems you have accomplished this step...

2. You must use the 'ifconfig' command to initialize the interface and make available to the kernel.

# ifconfig wlan0 up
3. You must use 'iwconfig' to set up the wireless interface, associate it with an essid, and enter your wep key.
Code:
# iwconfig wlan0 essid "Seneca"
# iwconfig wlan0 channel 6 # not strictly necessary, 6 is default
# iwconfig wlan0 key 0a12fc132 # if using hex wep key
# iwconfig wlan0 key s:secretwepkey # if using ascii wep key
Now based on your post, 'Seneca" is your essid. As I mention, '6' is the default channel, so it is not strictly necessary unless you change the channel of your wireless router. The last two lines are where you enter the wep key you set up on the wireless router. The first example is using hex key, and the second, ascii. You must only use 1 of these lines, depending on what type of wep key you use.

4. Use a dhcp client to poll the router for an ip address

# dhclient wlan0
Now you should be good to go. So I suggest you try the steps I've outlined here and try setting it up manually. Type 'ifconfig wlan0 down' to start from scratch, then:

# iwconfig wlan0 essid "Seneca"
# iwconfig wlan0 key wepkey
# dhclient wlan0
Try to ping a host on the internet now...

Now generally, your distro will wrap all these commands in a script for you, so you don't have to type them manually. Are you using Ubuntu? I don't use Ubuntu myself, so I can't tell you exactly where the script is, or how it works. Some places to look: /etc/init.d/ or /etc/rc.d/ should hold the startup script. Look for something like "net.wireless" or similar. There may also be configuration files in /etc/conf.d that you need to edit.

Someone using wireless on Ubuntu could help you a lot more sorting out your scripts. Or else, perhaps there is a page on wireless in the Ubuntu wiki?

Like hermitjared, I also have a Dell Inspiron 1200 and a Dell Wireless 1350 card running kubuntu 5.10. I tried several drivers from Dell, but they were either bcmwl5 or bcmwl5a.

I did everything suggested here by bulliver as well as at http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/m.../Installation.

The EEISD and WEP key are correct in /etc/network/interfaces. Everything I've tried seems fine (i.e. no obvious errors) such as iwlist, ifconfig, etc..

kwifimanager shows a connection, but NO IP address.

When the laptop boots up, it stays at "Network Configuration" for a while (maybe a minute or 2) before proceeding. The power light on the wireless card is strong. The link light flickers now and then. I can even ping the gateway at 192.168.1.1 .

It looks to me like everything is functioning, except for getting a dynamic IP address from the router.

Please tell me what else I can try and what log files I can look at to detect whatever I am missing.

Success finally.

Again, my system is a Dell Inspiron 1200 with a Dell 1350 Wireless PC card (not mini-PC) running Kubuntu 5.10.

I downloaded the card driver from http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/R94827.EXE. Either bcmwl5.inf or bcmwl5a.inf works for me.

I downloaded and COMPILED the latest ndiswrapper (ver 1.6) following the instructions from http://wiki.kubuntu.org/SetupNdiswrapperHowto.

The instructions to install the driver and config the wireless card are from http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/m...p/Installation

I can now sleep soundly
