Hi, I compiled the madwifi module, made install then I tried to add the module (modprobe ath_pci) As result i had FATAL cannot find ath_pci module.
I tried depmod -a, didn't work. I tried to edit /etc/modules.conf to force depmod to go in /lib/modules/2.6xxxxxcustom/net, didn't work. The modules are not in modules.def. Also tried depmod with -b option but it add the supposed good dir to the string given.
The modules are in /lib/modules/2.6xxxxxcustom/net with a *.ko extension.
If you where able to compile the madwifi, that's good, but there is something else to do.
Go in the /usr/src folder, and look for the kernel sources that must be installed somewhere in there... There will be a Makefile in the kernel folder, open this makefile... In it, there will be written the version details of the kernel. (amoung the first lines)
Make sure it matches yours... In order for me to make my modules work, I had to backspace the "custom" word in the version. For SMP kernel users, you need to replace "custom" with "smp"...
The kernel source version number must match your current. Mandrake adds "custom" to the version number when you install the kernel sources. You must remove "custom" and make the version match.
Then, go in your madwifi folder, "make clean", "./configure" if nessessary, then "make" and "make install"... Afterwards, all you need to do is "modprobe ath_pci"
Detailled procedure, specific to mandriva users. In fact, mandriva uses non standard directories. Problem comes from location of the modules in ***custom dir. Read the link, and it's a go ;-)
I had already installed the source, make and make install madwifi so I just copied the modules in the go(o)d directory and updated the conf file, then modprobe worked
