updatedb updates a database of ALL files on your computer..so u get instant results whenever u search for something with 'locate' (provided things havent changed too much)

ok were getting somewhere now..read the /etc/hotplug/firmware.agent file in a text editor..theres a line which says something like:

# directory of the firmware files
FIRMWARE_DIR=/lib/firmware

that is most likely where you should copy your firmware...update hotplug to the latest package just in case..

The file said
FIRMWARE_DIR=/usr/lib/hotplug/firmware
But, I have no such file.
Since I'd already extracted the files into /etc/firmware (as a guess), I changed the line to
FIRMWARE_DIR=/etc/firmware
But no change. Network configuration still recognizes the device, but it can't activate it.
Where to from here? I checked, I do have the latest version of hotplug.

You lost me at "modprobe".... and which file or folder is the "module"?

Sorry. I'm still an idiot about these things.

The computer calls it "ipw2200", or eth1. It's the Intel Pro Wireless 2200 (BG).
I have no idea about the kernel. I haven't messed with the kernel, I tend to avoid that. Too much bad happens if I screw up.

Sorry for the delay. Still want to help?

ok most likely your card will be card wlan0 and n ot eth0/1...anyway open a terminal like konsole, xterm or gnome-terminal and type

$ modprobe ipw2200
$ iwconfig

(do not type the $ sign of course)

tell me what the output of these two commands are..

[root@localhost root]# modprobe ipw2200
[root@localhost root]# iwconfig
iwconfig: error while loading shared libraries: libiw.so.27: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
[root@localhost root]#

How's that?

not good...ure module loads properly, but u don not have wireless-tools installed properly..try using yum/synaptic/(whatever FC uses) and install that package and run that command..some dependencies seem to be missing with that package

Gah.

Reinstalling, I'm confused:
KERNEL REQUIREMENTS - Crypto Library
---------- -------- --------- ----- ----- --- -- -
IPW2200 uses the WEP encryption and decryption algorithms provided
by the Linux kernel. As such, in order to use WEP you must enable the
Crypto library support (CONFIG_CRYPTO) and the following algorithms:

ARC4 cipher algorithm (CONFIG_CRYPTO_ARC4)

You also need to enable the following from Library routines:

CRC32 (CONFIG_CRC32)

Check for these with:

% for i in CRYPTO_ARC4 CRC32; do \
grep CONFIG_ \
/lib/modules/2.6.10/build/include/linux/autoconf.h; done

What does this mean? The entire install file is at http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net/INSTALL
