The infamous ndiswrapper question

I've gone through the forum and I can't find suitable help for installing my Belkin Wireless G USB network adapter (F5D7050). I'm using SuSE 10 and I've installed the ndiswrapper that came with it. It seems my driver is installed properly (rt73), but I still can't configure my wireless adapter. I've copied my commands and outputs for my system. Can anyone help? Thanks

There's your problem. Your ndiswrapper module is for the wrong kernel you have to compile ndiswrapper for your kernel and install it.

I've checked the ndiswrapper FAQs so I'm going to check if compiler is the corrected one installed.

Since I'm a debian user, I don't know if Suse has a packaging system. If it does, all you have to do is download the ndiswrapper module for your kernel and install it. I'm pretty sure it uses rpms so installation should be easy. After you install ndiswrapper you should be able to do modprobe ndiswrapper and get everything working

Yeah, it's a common problem with Suse. If you use the version of ndiswrapper that's included in Yast, you'll see this problem a lot. Make sure to remove the driver with "ndiswrapper -e drivername" and remove ndiswrapper in Yast. Then just get the latest version from sourceforge, install the kernel-source package that matches your kernel version, create the symbolic link, compile, and install your driver. Should fix it. The following links should help:

To download ndiswrapper go here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ndiswrapper/

For installation instructions, go here: http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/m...p/Installation

Still not working, I've made sure the compilers are both the same but no luck.

cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.13-15-default (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 4.0.2 20050901 (prerelease) (SUSE Linux)) #1 Tue Sep 13 14:56:15 UTC 2005

gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 4.0.2 20050901 (prerelease) (SUSE Linux)

I then followed the instructions: "Again, if you use a precompiled kernel, make sure that it does not come with an existing ndiswrapper module (for example the SuSE 10 kernel distribution comes with ndiswrapper in /lib/modules/`uname -r`/extras/ndiswrapper.ko) that is causing the error. If this is the case then remove/move the module, install ndiswrapper again and run depmod -a; you should then pick up the correct module."

I then ran:
modinfo ndiswrapper
modinfo: could not find module ndiswrapper

ndiswrapper -l
Installed ndis drivers:
rt73 driver present, hardware present

ndiswrapper -m
Adding "alias wlan0 ndiswrapper" to /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper

Try checking back in your module folder and doing modprobe. I have never tried modinfo so I don't know what it does.

By the way, usually if you reboot your computer, the kernel should automatically load the module if it finds it.

You removed the ndiswrapper.ko file before you compiled ndiswrapper from source, right? What happens if you type modprobe ndiswrapper?

There is no sign of the ndiswrapper.ko at all. I compiled ndiswrapper and then I ran:

modprobe ndiswrapper
FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found.

ndiswrapper -l
Installed ndis drivers:
rt73 driver present, hardware present

I have a Belkin F5D7050 and it works great with the ndiswrapper that comes with Suse10 (V1.2, I think?). But I suspect you may have the wrong Windows driver...

The RT73 driver will "appear" to work, but it is actually the wrong driver and the dongle is non-operational (and that is under Windoze). I believe you need the RT2500usb driver, which you can download from the Ralink website.

Go here...
http://www.ralink.com.tw/drivers/Win...06_0.0.1.3.exe

and make sure you copy over the rt2500usb driver and not the rt73. I have the necessary .sys and .inf files if you would like them directly

Either way, Good luck...

You don't have a module so ndiswrapper can't be loaded to run the wrapped driver. You will need to recompile ndiswrapper from source so that the ndiswrapper.ko file will be copied back to the modules directory. That should fix it.
