strange things connecting to wireless net[fixed]

Toshiba Satellite
Cisco aironet 340 802.11b

Card is reckognized on boot and the drivers are there and working

Im in a room with a wireless router on an ibook to type this up.. my wireless is not working.

now when i scan for a ap with iwlist access I get nothing in range.

Now I cannot open kismet because the cisco aironet doesn't go into rfmon mode. So it almost getg working then errors on the pcap.. telling me i cannot go into rfmon mode. But I did an iwconfig
and it shows it picked up the ap(featherodd) and I can see it's mac addy in the ap field.

I still cannot connect to anything on the network... but atleast I can see the ap.

Now why can I only see it and scan for it with iwlist after I issue kismet ?

This is too strange
