Some basic wifi network monitor trips needed
 

Hi,

I have a wifi network in my house I and I would like to monitor it. How can I find out

1) how many people are using it
2) what the IPs given by my DHCP router to these people are
3) how much bandwidth they are using
4) anything else I should keep an eye on (what would that be?)

I use Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10

I assume a store bought router?
If so there is not much Linux can do there but units some offer the logs to be email to and email address. Usually lack good info anyways.
Other choice is build your own Linux router and run apps like tripwire and others.

yes. but is not a way, for example, to broadcast something to all computers on the subnet to make them "answer" thus getting a list of IPs?

Not if connected to a switch. A hub for instance sends data on all ports but for a switch it is in one port and directly to the other. Maybe you can sniff for arp packets and get mac info from that. The only real way is a router that can report that kind of info. The closet thing is a Cisco router.
