Question Sharing via samba & pre-setting

Hi there everyone, i've been breaking my mind over a problem for quite some time and i hope someone can help me.

Here's the situation :

I've got 2 computers, one at home (with redhat 9.0 on it) and one at a university studio (with windows xp on it). I want to be able to transfer files from one computer to another, but i don't know quite how to do it. I've been thinking of using a Samba-server to share my files, but i don't know how to get started..

At my studio, my computer is connected to my university network via a VPN connection.
I' ve been able to connect to the university network at home, using Cisco IPsec (over a VPNconnection), but the thing is: what's the next step to share my files??

Should I first be part of the same Workgroup as my studio pc...and only afterwards try to setup a Samba-server???? Or how does that work? And in case i need to set my linux-pc to become part of a workgroup, how must i do that?

I appreciate all help and i hope someone can get me started.

Already thanks!!!
