rh8.0 boot up stuck on "bringing up interface eth0"

i just installed red hat 8.0, and on the first boot and multiple boots after that, it hangs up on "bringing up interface:eth0" and wont fail it or anything, and it just sits there. i have a 233 with 13gb hd, a fairly old model but dont understand why it is hanging in this one spot. does anyone know what the hella is going on? thanks! -tnf

What is the exact make and model and version of eth0 device?

What driver are you using?

This is a desktop machine?

Are ever able to boot up or hangs each time forever?

If you are not ever able to boot then I would recommend to try
the following command at your grub or lilo prompt "linux single"
(without the double quotes).
This will at least allow you to boot to a unix shell and poke around on the system.

im not sure of the exact model, but when i had linux on another computer i didnt have to know that to get onto the internet. how can i change the driver? it is a desdtop. i havent gotten the system to start up since i installed, i left it on for over an hour and a half and it didtn work. where do i try the linux single command? thanks! -tnf

Oops. I forgot, you can boot single by placing the install CD in your machine, then power on machine, then when you get prompt to enter "linux" you enter
"linux single" instead (without the double quotes).

If it can't get any network info it can be like that - I remember that happened when I bring my computer from univ dorm back to home (different network setting), not a problem with the nic driver, just that in dorm I use dhcp and at home I use static address so it tries to get dhcp but can't. Can you hit control + d or c for it to stop doing that and continue booting normally. Then login , fix/change whatever network you problem you have.

what settings would i change

what settings would i need to change once i get the comptuer up and running? i have dynamic and i guess the dchp thingamajiggerbob, but could it be that it is a fairly old network card? thanks! -tnf

You can bring up the Redhat Network configurator(?) (or something similar) to set it up - I believe you can even disable bringing up the interface during start up via that tool.

i tried to boot using the command line linux single, and it just wanted me to install linux all over again. i also tried to hit crtl+d and crtl+c and cntl+b, but to no avail the system is locked up at "bringing up interface:eth0" it will not fail it, and it will not ok it. i have left it on for hours but it just keeps getting jammed at that one point. i think i will get a new network card, and go from there. -tnf

PS-can a mod please put this in the networking forum, not sure how my noobish skillz got it into the wireless networking forum... thanks!
