Redhat 9 WPC11 problems after kismet install

I am having a problem with the WPC11 card not being able to access WLAN after i installed kismet. Prior to kismet the card worked fine. I could surf , sniff packets, etc. I edited the cards settings through ifcfg-eth1 file and/or neat with no prob . ifconfig listed the wireless card as eth1

I installed kismet and it required wlan-ng kernel, pcmcia, and wireless, drivers/mods. Kismet works perfect now. It picks up WLAN's and traffic, but when i shut down kismet and unmonitor the card. I cannot access the WLAN. even if i restart pcmcia and network services nothing. if I reboot the box and try to access the WLAN nothing.

I have noticed that now ifconfig lists wlan0 and not eth1 now. I have been reading HOWTO's and man pages but no help. I have added ip address and netmasks as well as static gw routes for the wlan0, but no acitvity. ifconfig shows rx packets but not many tx packets. The activity light on card is blazing. Being kismet (as well as airsnort) displays traffic I can only assume that i have a configuration error on my part.

I am trying to connect to a WAP with ssid broadcast enabled, no WEP , static ip.

ifconfig
wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
inet addr:xx.xx.xx.xx Bcast:xx.xx.xx.xx Mask:xx.xx.xx.xx
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:630876 (616.0 Kb) TX bytes:2052 (2.0 Kb)

iwconfig

eth0 no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11-b ESSID:""

Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

cardctl status
Socket 0:
no card
Socket 1:

Any ideas to what is wrong?

If any one else needs a solutions to this read on.

At first i tried to edit the cards settings using iwconfig
etc. iwconfig wlan0 essid "My_WAP"

but i got error "Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A): Set failed on device wlan0; Function not implemented."

So i did the following

1. i edited /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0 to reflect my network settings.

2.You must also edit /etc/wlan/wlan.conf to enable the card.

3. After this /etc/init.d/pcmcia restart to restart the Wi-card.

ping's network host's fine.

The only thing now is when you reboot, linux tries to bring up the wlan0 interface BEFORE loading the prism2_mod. When you try to ping you get nothing. enter above pcmcia restart command and you are back in business.
