Red Hat 9 Linux Wireless Driver? - Very Long Post, Please Read!
 

Hey Guys,
Over the past few days I (with the help of NiteWolf) have gathered a great deal of information concerning my wireless connection, which will contribute to the solving of my wireless Linux problem. I would greatly appreciate for anyone who is knowledgeable in the area of Wireless networking to read this ENTIRE post...well, here goes! In my house there are 5 computers: 3 are wirelessly connected to the router (Linksys Wireless Access Point Router, BEFW11S4, 2.4 GHz, 802.11b) using Linksys Wireless USB Network Adapters, (not a PCI card, or hardware of the sort), one is wirelessly connected to the router using a Wireless Notebook Adapter, (also not a PCI card, or hardware of the sort), and one is directly connected to the router using an Ethernet Cable, (Cat5 Cable). The 4 computers in the house that are wirelessly connecting to the router are all using different Linksys models to wirelessly connect. My computer is using A "Linksys Wireless USB Network Adapter WUSB11, Version 1.2", (yes, very outdated). My sister's computer is using a "Linksys Wireless USB Network Adapter WUSB11, Version 2.6". My dad's computer is using a "Linksys Wireless Compact USB Network Adapter WUSB12, Version 1.05". And finally, my mom's computer is using a "Linksys Wireless-G Notebook Network Adapter", I could not find the model number and version, but that isn't relevant. The thing is, each of the 4 computers in the house that are wirelessly connecting to the router are using the same driver. We did not use the drivers that came with the products. Instead, we had a technician come over, he installed the same driver to every computer. The driver name is "Wireless USB Network Adapter Version 2.5". I could not find the company which manufactured this driver, but I do know that it works on a number of Linksys Wireless USB Network Adapters, and Linksys Wireless Notebook Network Adapters, and that it is only compatible with WindowsXP, (which tells you everyone in the house that wirelessly connects used WindowsXP until about a week ago, when I "Upgraded", to Linux). Alright, now to information concerning my computer. My system is currently running in dual boot: Red Hat 9 Linux, (which I installed last week), and WindowsXP. When I installed Red Hat 9 Linux, I planned to get the Internet up, install what I had to install, then delete WindowsXP, and transfer the remaining partition space to Red Hat 9 Linux. At the time, I did not know how hard and frustrating it could be to setup Wireless Internet on Linux. My central problem: I need to find a driver that is compatible with my "Linksys Wireless USB Network Adapter WUSB11, Version 1.2" model, a "Linksys Wireless Access Point Router, BEFW11S4, 2.4 GHz, 802.11b", and my "Red Hat 9 Linux" Operating System. If it comes to the point where absolutely NO such driver exists, then I would need to find a new Wireless USB Network Adapter that is made for Linux or supports Linux. If anybody knows of a driver that supports the specifications stated above, please let me know. If anybody knows for a FACT that no such driver exists, then please let me know. If anybody knows of a Wireless USB Network Adapter that is made for Linux or supports Linux, then please let me know. I am sorry for the long, detailed post, but all of the information is relevant, and I hope you have all taken the time to read it. Please help me out, Red Hat 9 Linux is unbelievable compared to WindowsXP, and I would really like to be able to get my Wireless Internet working. Okay, I switched with my sister, so I have the right model. I got your screenname, but I dont have the link you sent me, because when i switched them it knocked the Internet out for a short while. So I'll IM you when I you sign back on, thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

Can you give me a link to the tar file you had him download? I've been trying to help him with this for a while now (I was assuming he had the 1.2 version of the driver, which is extremely hard to find). He seems to be getting really frustrated and I don't want anyone to turn away from linux because of a setback like this.

I am curious of the link you had him download. I guess I need to ask if you can send it to me as well since you didn't leave it in the post.

have you tried searching for your .inf or .sys files for those drivers?

Linux products like linuxant.com and ndiswrapper can help with using windows drivers in linux.

The only problem with linuxant.com is that it is a single license, and if you have more than one network card you need to buy on license for each wireless card you install US$ 19.95 each. There must be another way?

I'm sorry to bring back old memories, but I have an almost identical situation to the original post. RedHat9, Linksys Router (BEFW11S4) and a USB adapter. Would someone involved in the solution please post the steps to take to solve the problem, as much of it was confined to AIM conversations, etc. Thanks guys!

ndiswrapper is free and works great. Im currently running WPA on fedora core 2 with a broadcom chipset.

ok, its been a while....what is it that you're having trouble with?

now i remember what you need to do...:)
with your specific card, the process is a long and hard one...first you need to download the driver for your kernel... http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/...ar.bz2?download
once that is done, you have to go on to the more difficult things for a noob, but youve been using linux for a year, so hopefully that should help,
as root, open your favorite text editor. open up the following file: /usr/src/<Your Kernel>/.config
if that file/folder isnt there, that means you dont have the kernel source. your going to have to download the kernel source from kernel.org and compile your kernel, actually, since you have suse, you might be able to use the the package management system (not sure what it is called).
but if you have the file, you need to look for the following lines:

CONFIG_MODULES=y
CONFIG_MODULE_UNLOAD=y # recommended
# CONFIG_SMP is not set
CONFIG_NET_RADIO=y # to enable wireless extensions
CONFIG_NET_WIRELESS=y

CONFIG_PCMCIA=y # mandatory for pcmcia
CONFIG_YENTA=y # or `=m', if you intend to use external cs
CONFIG_CARDBUS=y

CONFIG_USB=y # mandatory for usb
CONFIG_USB_EHCI_HCD=m # `=m' to all 3 HCI's is the least risky option
CONFIG_USB_OHCI_HCD=m # therefore `=y' is not recommended.
CONFIG_USB_UHCI_UHCI_ALT=m # you only need to select the one that suits you
# but selecting all of them won't do any harm
if they differ in any way than those lines, like if theres a number sign infront of the capital letters, then we have to do more work. (dont pay attention the the text thats in the right hand column that is after the number sign. only look if the number sign is infront of the command in all caps.)
so check if this stuff works and report back.

or you could post what your version of those lines look like so we can interpret it. and ps, the lines wont be grouped together...they'll be all over the place so i reccomend using a text editor that has a find or search word function...it will make life alot easier :)

i'm also a newbi, i just installed my self last night, the only experiance i have is a bootable cd (Knoppix)
