Problems using Wpa_supplicant and linuxant

I recently installed SuSE 9.1 Personal on my Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. I have a Linksys WPC54G PCMCIA wireless card, which I have recently configured with Linuxant. I am trying to install the WPA supplicant since my wireless network uses WPA encryption. I am having some difficulty making this work. I compiled the program fine, wrote a config file, and typed this at the command line

ifup wlan0 & wpa_supplicant -iwlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -Bw

When I type this, it spits out a couple lines about the wlan0 and DCHP client, and then it says something like

attempting to connect to 'homenet' 2.437 MHz
connection to [insert MAC address here] timed out
(And it just repeats that a whole bunch of times)

I'm sorry I can't provide exact resposnes from the system, but I can't get the internet on my linux box yet because of this wireless problem. Has anyone used wpa_supplicant? Do these responses seem to indicate a misconfiguration on my part, or does the problem lay somewhere else? I'd appreciate any help you guys can give me. Thanks
