Problems setting up SuSE 10 with a Netgear WG111V2 USB Adapter
 

Hello all!

I am attempting to set up SuSE Linux with a Netgear WG111V2 USB Adapter. Unfortunatley, SuSE doesn't support it by default. I have downloaded ndiswrapper and the Windows Drivers (the only ones available) for my Wireless Adapter. I am new to Linux, and do not know where to go from there. Both these files are burned on a CD. Because of limitations at my home, I cannot use a hardwire internet connection - only wireless, with this adapter.

I would appreciate it if you would provide me with detailed instructions on how to install/configure this. If you need more information, or I need to download anything else, let me know.

Obviously, I am somewhat of a noob too. But I did get a linksys adapter to work with ndiswrapper after a while.

I would say, if you can't understand the wiki, Google the topic. I can say from experience that Google is a Linux user's best friend.

Netgear wireless
 

I had the same problem at one point. A while back I installed suse 9.3 on my laptop and the first time i did, it would not recognize my netgear card. One thing you can do is open yast and install software, on the search for wireless drivers and make sure you have those installed that could fix your problem. Another thing I did, I installed suse from scratch again but this time I had my wired network hookep up and my wireless card as well, Automatically when yast was updating, since I was using wired conection, it loaded my drivers for the card so I didnt even had to configure it, it was ready to use. Thank you jacobt. I downloaded the set of Windows drivers from Netgear's website. The package, unfortunatley, comes with an install utility only :(

It does, however, contain the following files:

A folder called utility. That folder contains: data1.cab, data1.hdr, data2.cab, engine32.cab, layout.bin, setup.exe, setup.ini, setup.inx. Would I use any of these? Or would I need to find something else? If so, could someone assist me with that.

Also, it appears as if I don't have make or automake installed. Where can I get those?

I've been digging through settings and Googling like mad, but can't find how to get and use make and automake.... I need these so I can run the make install command :-I

According to the wiki card list, you can use the driver that came on the CD for your card. If you don't have it, you can get it from driverguide.com if you sign up I guess. (it's free) As for the make package, open Yast, click on "software management" and search for the make package and install it. If for some reason it doesn't show up, go to rpm.pbone.net and search for an RPM for Suse. (might have to use a 9.3 package). Although I'm pretty sure make should come with Suse, so I'm not sure why it says you need it. Some things to check: Are you logged in as root while compiling? Are you in the ndiswrapper directory? I'm trying to a put a webpage together for newbies to use. It gives you links to see what driver you need, how to install it, a few common errors, etc. I'm still working on it as it's only a day old, but it might help you get things going. OK, I ran a search... is YaST, "make" returns No Results (that aren't installed)...

I'll keep looking, maybe I just missed :D

the install utility is really just a win-zip self-extractor (At least it was for my Linksys USB Adapter).....right-click and do extract maybe?

I've never used SuSe before but in Debian this is what I did.

I have the Netgear CD that came with the adapter and I mounted it and copied the files to my home. I then went into the Driver folder and then the WINME folder. Then I installed the net111v2.inf. No problems, although it did take my friends and I a while to figure that out.

Like I said, this worked on Debian and I have no clue if it will work in SuSe.
