Unhappy Problem with "make" for rt8180" driver

I am trying to install a MA521 wireless card in fedora core 1. I downloaded the driver from the Realtek website(rtl8180_24x_rh90). Iwas able to run make clean. When I try to run make it comes back with the following info:

gcc -O6 -Wall -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -DLINUX -I /usr/src/linux/include/ -DRTL_IO_MAP -DRTL_LITTLE_ENDIAN -DRTL_ACT_AS_STA -c -o r8180_pci_init.o r8180_pci_init.c

Sounds like your kernel-source code is missing.

# Compiling/installing kernel modules
You will need to have installed:
1. The developmental packages (compiler)
2. The kernel-source code that matches your running kernel
3. The module source or install code

Check out your system and look under the hood and see if you installed the stuff you need to do the job. Open an x terminal and type in this sequence of commands to see what kernel we are running and see if you have the kernel source installed:
Code:
[fancy@tinwhistle fancy]$ su -
Password:
[root@tinwhistle root]# uname -r
2.4.20-28.7
I am running kernel version 2.4.20-28.7. Do I have the proper source code?
Code:
[root@tinwhistle root]# cd /usr/src
[root@tinwhistle src]# ls -alc
total 3
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 136 Jun 12 14:53 .
drwxr-xr-x 16 root root 424 Jun 4 12:04 ..
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           14 Jun  4 12:11 linux-2.4 -> linux-2.4.20-28.7
drwxr-xr-x 16 root root 584 Jun 4 12:11 linux-2.4.20-28.7
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 168 Jun 4 12:08 redhat
[root@tinwhistle src]#
I do have the same kernel version source code installed in the directory /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-28.7 and there is a symbolic link named linux-2.4 pointing to it.

If you don't see something similiar to this (but in color), you will need to install the kernel source.

NOTE: I noticed that Red Hat didn't make the symbolic link /usr/src/linux that all of the INSTALL files that I have read mentioned that I need. I may as well make one now to save editing the files in the source code every time I need to compile anything concerning the kernel. So, I'll make that link just now:
Code:
[root@tinwhistle src]# ln -s linux-2.4.20-28.7 linux
[root@tinwhistle src]# ls -alc
total 3
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 160 Jun 12 15:46 .
drwxr-xr-x 16 root root 424 Jun 4 12:04 ..
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           14 Jun 12 15:46 linux -> linux-2.4.20-28.7
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           14 Jun  4 12:11 linux-2.4 -> linux-2.4.20-28.7
drwxr-xr-x 16 root root 584 Jun 4 12:11 linux-2.4.20-28.7
drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 168 Jun 4 12:08 redhat
[root@tinwhistle src]#
Ah, there it is, so that's done.

Next, did I install the compiler?
Code:
[root@tinwhistle src]# gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/2.96/specs
gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.3 2.96-113)
[root@tinwhistle src]#
Yes, I have a compiler installed.

If you don't have those two things installed, you have to install them first off your install CD.

If they are installed, download the source and happy compiling. Make sure you carefully read the README and INSTALL files after extracting and before compiling/installing.

When I run "make" it shows the following ouput and I am not sure what it means.

You succeeded with make because it didn't exit with an error.

Now you need to install your binary code that you just sucessfully compiled.

What did the README and INSTALL files suggest that you do after make completes? Hmm... That answer sounds very familiar......

(Don't you just hate those Read That Fine Manual answers? )

They contain exactly the instructions you need to run in order to install the code, I can't be bothered just now to open one and paste the instructions in for you.

If this is for Belkin's F5D6001 card, then just load the module and enable the interface using the "wlanup" script provided with driver.

I also have the same exact issue with my Netgear MA521. According to several sites, this is all that was needed to make and install this module. I was expecting to find the answer on this post since I am getting these same warnings from my make process. But somebody did not finish the story...

Next you run make install or sudo make install, which basically copies the new build module into the appropriate module location in the kernel sources directory.

However, when you run the wlanup command (which basically starts by executing a insmod -f rtl8180_24x) I got some errors (on occasions) but in general no good results. During my best try, when checking loaded modules through lsmod I got the following:

Code:
Module Size Used by Tainted: GF
yenta_socket 13472 1 (initializing)

printer 9376 0
keybdev 2656 0 (unused)
...
I removed some of the other modules on the list for clarity.

After this, any command directed toward the network ends up in hanging the screen I am on (ifconfig, netstat, and even a shutdown-----when shutting down, the process hangs in the "bringing down eth0").

Can somebody please advice what to do? I have used other, more "hands-on" distros like Gentoo, but I wanted this linux-on-my-laptop to be easier to work with: I love Gentoo, but it can be quite time consuming on the desktop side (vs. server).

Another question: Is there a way to kill any of these processes? 'kill -9' does not seem to work on any hung process, and by trying a modprobe -r on the hung module, I only get back a "Device or resource busy" response

Thanks
Rex
