Problem w/ SuSe 9.2 & WPC11, when everything seems to be configured

Hi

I am a newbee, both to this site and to linux. I got this site after searching for some commendable information for my problem. Here's the issue.

I have a Linksys 802.11 B ethernet card which I wanted to configure so that I could use my laptop wireless. I have SuSe 9.2 PRO installed. I proceeded as many have advised, I got the NDISWRAPPER, installed it, got the XP drivers, installed the INF file, checked to see if everything was running and got this

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

sit0 no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"49 Division"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437GHz Access Point: 00:01:24:F22:1A
Bit Rate:11Mb/s Tx-Power:20 dBm Sensitivity=0/3
RTS thr:2432 B Fragment thr:2432 B
Encryption keyff
Power Managementff
Link Quality:100/100 Signal level:-72 dBm Noise level:-256 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

then checked to see the dmesg

and got thsi

wlan0: ndiswrapper ethernet device 00:0c:41:76:de:fe using driver rtl8180.sys
ndiswrapper device wlan0 supports WPA with AES/CCMP and TKIP ciphers

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

my link light has come up as well, but I still can't seem to get my wireless to work?? I am just stuck now, for it seems the installation went ok, but still I have no cigar.

Any help

It looks like you haven't requested or assigned an IP address. The iwconfig output looks like you have the card configured properly, and it sees you router. The next step would be to ask for an IP address from your DHCP server. I think Suse uses dhclient, so the command would be dhclient wlan0. If you then check the output of ifconfig, you should see an IP address and you should be good to go. By the way, you probably have to su to root to do this.

An alternative would be to assign an IP address to your card. You do that with ifconfig

ifconfig wlan0 1.2.3.4
route add default gw 5.6.7.8

Replace 1.2.3.4 with the IP you want your wireless card to use and 5.6.7.8 with the IP of your router. You will probably have to edit your /etc/resolv.conf file as well to include your ISP's nameservers. For each nameserver, add a line

nameserver 4.5.6.7

and use the real IP address for the nameserver.

SuSE 9.2 wireless problems dhcp

There is another thread that may help, I've been very frustrated with Suse 9.1/9.2 since the wireless did not work automatically. I had FEDORA CORE 3 and worked perfect, the same with WINXP.

My card was detected no problem, KWiFimanager showed full strength, but the the dhcp configuration did not work. I tried several things and nothing worked.

Today I finally figure it out thanks to this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/252969

In summary the easiest thing to do is to remove your wireless card from the network devices and create a new conection to reconfigure the wlan. That did it for me !

If that does not work look at the thread above, it may be that you need to specify how/when to handle the dhcp to request the IP.

Hope this helps. Good luck !

here is the "ifcfg-wlan-bus-pcmcia" file that was created on "/etc/sysconfig/network"
worked perfect for me, the only change I made was the STARTMODE, I prefer 'hotplug'.

REMOTE_IPADDR=''
STARTMODE='hotplug'
USERCONTROL='no'

WIRELESS_POWER='yes'
