Problem w/connecting to internet through ethernet or wireless

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop with dual boot Windows XP and Mepis installed. I can connect the Internet with no problem, but on Mepis I am unable to connect to the internet through Linsys or Belkin wireless card or the ethernet card. I click on ADSL/PPPOE configuration. On that it says that it found 1 eth0. It does the scanning and I get an error message that states "Sorry, I scanned 1 interface (s), but the Access Concentrator of your provider did not respond. Please check you network and modem cables. Another reason for the scan failure may also be another running pppoe process which the controls the modem." I am pretty new to Linux so I have no idea how to fix this so that I can Internet access. I know both cards work and the ethernet because Windows connects with no problem.

thanks

I wasnt getting anything just that it wasn't connected. I decided to try SUSE 9.2. I got the ethernet to work and the Linksys wireless card is installed automatically. I am not sure how to configure it through network configuration or any other way.
thanks
