Prism 54 Device soft reset timed out

I bought a SMC 2835W 802.11g cardbus card for the laptop (and yes, it takes 32 bit cards). The card should be supported by the Prism54 driver (part of the default Debian kernel). When I try to ifup eth0 (eth1 is the
PCMCIA ethernet card, eth0 is the SMC card), I get the following:
eth0: device soft reset timed out
eth0: timeout waiting for mgmt response
<repeat above 3x>
eth0: mgmt tx queue still full
<repeat above 16x>

As this scrolls across the screen, the Link light on the card blinks three times. I've read the Prism54 documentation: I have the firmware in the right place (it loads ok), I've tried all the available firmwares including the .arm file supplied on the windows driver set by SMC). Any thoughts?
Google was less than helpful...one user reported a similar issue with the SMC card and resolved it by modifying the IRQs via BIOS. My BIOS doesn't allow modifying IRQs...

TIA!

Wow one year after

I got the same problem with a NETGEAR WG511, the firmware loads successfuly and then:

eth0: device soft reset timed out
eth0: timeout waiting for mgmt response
<repeat above 3x>
eth0: mgmt tx queue still full
<repeat above 16x>

Tried all "google tips" and nothing, i'm unable to modify my BIOS IRQ settings.

Thanks in advance
