Orinoco PCMCIA cards... work or not?
My laptop is a Dell Latitude C610. I currently have a Linksys WPC54G wireless card with the BCM4318 chipset. No matter what I do, I cannot get it to work. I heard and have read the Orinico Classic Gold wireless card does work. Can anyone verify this?

Buy an SMC card ... in fact, buy this one: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=479260
Just as functional as an ORiNOCO Classic but more power.

I found that the orinoco classic gold pc card worked well with fedora core 3 and 4. When you attempted to add it using the network device configurator, it suggested a driver which worked. WEP was supported, but not WPA. You can check with them, but I would think if they offered a newer b/g card, it would work with WPA by now.

I'm running Mepis 6.0, if this makes any sort of difference. It seems to be Wifi friendly. I checked out the above mentioned SMC card, but it is only 802.1 b. The Orinoco comes in 802.11 b/g. I don't know if it'll make a huge difference. Any input? There doesn't seem to be a clear cut choice. I just know most anything will work better than the current card. WPA or WEP won't matter either.

You asked about the ORiNOCO Classic Gold. That's an 802.11B card that will only do WEP, same as the SMC. There are other B/G and A/B/G cards sold under the ORiNOCO and Proxim brands that will work - the ones with Atheros chipsets. It's the chipset, not the brand that makes the difference.
Your Linksys card should work, for that matter, using ndiswrapper.
