No association with my AP

Good day,

I'm using the Intel Pro Wireless 2100 card in my laptop, running Slackware 11. I can't seem to connect to my router (Linksys WRT54g). The wireless card doesn't even see it. Here is some output from various utilities:

iwconfig eth1:
eth1 unassociated ESSID:"cowbell" Nickname:"darkstar"
Mode:Managed Frequency=2.437 GHz Access Point: Not-Assoc
Bit Rate=0 kb/s Tx-Powerff
Retry min limit:7 RTS thrff Fragment thrff

Power Managementn
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

ifconfig eth1:

eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:04:23:77:F0:97
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
Interrupt:10 Base address:0x4000 Memory:d0214000-d0214fff

iwlist eth1 scan:

eth1 No scan results

I'm really not sure how to proceed from here. I'm not using any sort of encryption until I can get a standard connection. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Similar prob

Im running SuSe 10.1 ... having a similar problem... but oddly enough the machine works over wifi (with wep etc.) when I have it set to DHCP... it only craps out when I try to set a static IP...

What am I (we) doing wrong here? It's like it never associates with the wireless gateway without DCHP... but still assigns the device an IP address... is there a command to change the state of a wifi card to connect it or disconnect it from the specified wireless gateway?

Solution

I got it to work for me finally!

The setting I needed to specify was in /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg_[device address]

I changed the value of
WIRELESS_AP='xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx'

So get the MAC address of your local wireless acess point and type it in that field.

Again, this was how I got it to work in SuSe 10.1... you're mileage may vary with other setups.

Hope this helps anyone :-/

I've been browsing through these threads in an effort to solve my problem, and one thing that I've noticed...my bit rate is 0 and my transmit power is off. Do I have to manually enable these? I'm assuming (and I could be very wrong) that since iwconfig has output for my card that there aren't any issues with drivers. Is that a safe assumption?

WIRELESS_AP key with openSUSE 10.2 64bit

Hey all,

when I boot my computer my wireless network works fine. There are a couple of wireless access points in the neighborhood so I explicitly set the WIRELESS_AP='xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx' value in the /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-wlan-id-xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx configuration file.

But when I manually restart my network with /etc/init.d/network restart then I can't connect to the internet. Probably because ESSID broadcast disabled on my wireless router and open authentication mode and some specific keys set. I have to set the iwconfig wlan0 ap xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx again and then the dhclient can get a new IP from the DHCP server running on my US Robotics wireless router.

But how come there the WIRELESS_AP key is not used in any of the network scripts?

grep 'WIRELESS_AP' /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts/ifup-wireless
if [ "$WIRELESS_AP_SCANMODE" = "2" ]; then
if [ "$WIRELESS_AP_SCANMODE" = "2" ]; then
test -n "$WIRELESS_AP_SCANMODE" && echo "ap_scan=$WIRELESS_AP_SCANMODE"

Does anyone have an explanation for this? That's probably the reason why I have to register manually to the MAC address of my wireless router.

Thanks for your reply,

Mark
