Need Help Networking with Linksys WMP54G Wireless Adapter
 

I need help get my wireless NIC card to work on rh9.0. I installed rh9.0 on a computer that previously had Windows ME and the wireless card was working with Windows. I have a Linksys WMP54G PCI adapter card. I saw instructions for installing this card for Slackware Linux posted by barton. Does anyone know of any instructions for rh9.0 or ideas of how I can get it to work?

I'm also using the Linksys wireless router WRT54G ver 2...If that matters.

I'm relatively new to Linux so please make your replies in simple terms.

I read under hardware compatibility where someone said they installed the card, installed the driver using ndiswrapper, activated wlan and set essid on rh9.0 and was surfing the net within 10 minutes of starting.

Can anyone explain exactly how to do what was mentioned above...I told you I was a newbie.

I found some instructions and tried, but they didn't seem to work...

Unzip ndiswrapper
type make
type make install
type ndiswrapper -i /mnt/cdrom1/Drivers/<driver>
type modprobe ndiswrapper
type ndiswrapper -l
type ndiswrapper -m
type iwconfig wlan0

There was more, but I'm doing this off the top of my head because I don't have the procedures in front of me and I never got past "modprobe ndiswrapper. I tried loading the driver from the CD that came with the adapter card using ndiswrapper ver 1.2 and it seemed to have loaded, but when I run modprobe ndiswrapper it doesn't seem to work. It gives me errors.

Any ideas???

The ndiswrapper website says it only works on kernel versions 2.4.26 or later and I have 2.4.20-8. Even though I read a post from someone that said they got it to work with the same kernel version I have, is it possible that this is my problem? I don't know what version of ndiswrapper he used, but I'm assuming this matters. How can I find out what version of ndiswrapper I need or do I need to upgrade my kernel? If I need to upgrade my Kernel, how do I do that?

My Linux system is not on the network, so I'd need procedures on how to download to a window xp system then load it to the linux system.

Okay, I've managed to update my kernel to 2.4.20-31. I'm going to remove and reinstall ndiswrapper and see if I can get it to work. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should do this? Would someone at least post a reply to this...even if it's a sympathy reply so I know that replies can be posted by others besides me. I feel like I'm talking myself through this which is scary because I'm probably just making my system worse...

I removed and reloaded ndiswrapper and it still doesn't work. Modprobe doesn't seem to find ndiswrapper. I'm thinking that some ndiswrapper versions don't work with certain kernel versions. Can anyone confirm or deny this and tell me how I can determine which ndiswrapper works with which kernel version?

The Ndiswrapper people also say that you shouldn't use the drivers from your cd, that you should use the drivers from their site - apparently the cd drivers don't always work. They can be found here - I think your card is number 6 on the list.

Your kernel (never mind your distro) is woefully out of date and both are, I believe, no longer supported - this means that you will get no updates or security fixes. If you are a fan of Red Hat, could I suggest you get the latest version of Fedora? It comes with a more up to date kernel, which means that your hardware is more likely to be supported. The latest stable vanilla kernel version is 2.6.12.2, I think Fedora has that kernel or a nearer number.

I'm not really that familiar with any of the versions of Linux. I loaded Redhat on my computer at home because we use both RH7.3 and 9.0 at work and I wanted to get familiar with using it. We're suppose to upgrade to Enterprise eventually...

Thanks for the information. The web site you provided was the one I'd been using to install/uninstall ndiswrapper. I wasn't sure where to get a driver on line so I hadn't tried that yet. I'll give it a try tomorrow and let you know how it went. I looked on the web site you provided for hints and there wasn't anything listed for Redhat.
