Network Management

Hey All.

I know this is probably really obvious. But I have not yet found a solution. I have looked through google.com and could find nothing.

There are currently three wireless networks I connect to. One at school (w/ encryption), one at home (w/ encryption) and one at home(wo/ encryption).

I can connect to any three network and get an IP address from DHCP. Here are my problems:

Each time I switch networks I have to use YaST (I have SuSE 9.0) to change my wireless configuration settings. This process takes a couple minutes, but it a pain and should not be necssary.

Secondly, my machine gets an IP no trouble, but does not seem to be able to get the DNS servers and gateway automatically. So I have to manually enter it into my /etc/resolv.conf file and do the command
"route add default gw 192.168.1.254" (or 1 ) depending on the network.

So, what utility do I use to keep track of all my wireless networks and change to the available network.

Why is it not getting DNS or Gateway addresses?

Thanks,

David

i suppose it might deal with dhcpcd not getting all the info...

this is the kind of thing where i think linux is going backwards -- distros are developing propritary solutions to make things 'easier' for the user... while the user learns less and less about how things are happening...

i have similar setup -- wireless @ home, wireless for the road. home is encrypted, road locations are not. i have written 2 shell scripts (one for each class of network) to 1) kill existing network connections 2) setup wireless connection.

the shell scripts enclose a few commands using dhcpcd, iwconfig and ifconfig to set things up, and things work great...

i have not run YaST/SuSE, so i am not sure what to give you, but i have found that the shell scripts i run have taken any pain out of swapping networks, as i just issue one command.

I solved the DHCP issues.

It would seem that by default network was started before PCMCIA, and my wireless card is PCMCIA.

I changed around the order of the startup and now it gets all the information no problem.

But I am still looking for an easier way to manage my wireless networks.

I don't want to have to write scripts, there has got to be an easier way.
