Okay, I spent some time and I found out that I already have dhcp-client 3 installed. How do I use it?? if i just run dhclient eth0 that should be it right?
When I run 'ifconfig' this is what i get:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:09:5B:37:03:BB
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
eth0:9 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:09:5B:37:03:BB
inet addr:169.254.170.212 Bcast:169.254.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

TX packets:283 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:27471 (26.8 Kb) TX bytes:27471 (26.8 Kb)
I'm not sure why it keeps installing eth0:9 and giving it that address. My dhcp server SHOULD assign a local address like "192.168.0.5" or something
If I run iwconfig, I get:eth0
ATMEL RFMD503A ESSID:"ScottsHome" Nickname:"ScottsHome"
Mode:Managed Channel:11 Access Point: 00:09:5B:86:0B:26

The key is right and the everything else is right. My USB adapter is on eth 0, but on bootup, I get a message when it tries to bring up the eth0. It looks like it's trying to ask the dhcp server, then in forces it into the 169.254.170.212 address and sets up eth0:9 AFTER that, it says 'eth1 up' I had a nic card that I took out just to make sure it wasn't interfering with the eth0 setting for the usb adapter.
after bootup, I still have to run iwconfig eth0 enc open key [1] xxxxxxx to get it set up right. Here's the output of dmesg (at least, what I thought was relavent to the problem).

Is this usb adapter stuck in scan mode or something? i'm at a loss.
