Netgear DG834GT - connection mystery

Hello ,

I've just purchased a netgear DG834GT and connected using my laptop through xp - no problem...

The laptop is dual boot and is running FC4. The wireless card is an intel 2200 ( i think from memory) and I have used KWIFI in the past to connect to very similar routers. However, I cannot connect to this router - or more specifically --- I connect to the router ( i.e. I can ping it, or log into it to change settings)
but cannot connect to the net???

I have tried manually assigning ip's - no luck - and the WEP key must be working
?

I have tried disabling SELINUX... no luck.

The only other info is that I get an error when I activate my eth0 :

cannot set bit rate , command not supported ((( or something like that))).

Any help would be much much appreciated because I need to work remotely now and getting into the lab at uni is making me want to cry.

Does it work with other computers? It sounds like something wrong with the router.

Have you set the gateway address in your network config to the IP address of your router?

Dont think its a problem with the router for a few reasons. It works on the other computers in my house ( all running xp) and it works on my laptop's xp boot . I have it dual booting and its just fedora which im getting problems with. The w.card works fine too with Linux or its used too!!! i did update the kernel but i cant see how this would affect it.

And yes i've also set the gatway address correctly...

if you read my original post you'll see the odd thing. I can connect to the router wirelessly - i.e log in and play at adminstration etc but I cant connect to the net???

But i can connect to the net with an ethernet connetion on the same router??

Maybe the wired connection was not deactivated properly, make sure it is completely inactive then try connecting again. If it doesn't work post the output of "route". Also make sure it's not a dns problem (ping 64.179.4.149).

The wired connection is definitely decativated. Im assigning a static ip which I have reserved on the router for my mac address. There's another tab in system settings > network called route which I havent added anything too. Do I have to add my IP destination in here?

The card wont assign an ip by dhcp??

~how do I get the output of route?

also I cant ping 64.179.4.149??

Could this be something to do with the error im getting - cannot set bit rate: operation not supported?

again - thanks for any help

If you are assigning a static IP, you may also need to set your DNS server and gateway settings. Try setting those entries to the internal IP address of your router.

On another note, I've found WiFiRadar to be the best wireless profile manager. Maybe give that one a try?

Run the command "route" (like ping). Or try "/sbin/route".

Ok thanks for the help but I solved it now...

The problem was when I used ndiswrapper to install a w.card on my desktop and got the same problem

'aaa' - you were along the right lines when you asked if my ethernet was deactivated. At the time it was but it had to be disabled at startup others it took over the dchp rights and the eth1 could never get an ip after that.

Thanks for the help
