ndiswrapper and kernel version
 

Hi,

After getting some advice in the thread below, I thought ndiswrapper
would probably be useful when I go get a wireless card. However the
instructions say this:

"You need a recent kernel (at least 2.6.6 or 2.4.26) with source."

Now, I'm running Red Hat 9 and kernel 2.4.20-13.9. I went and
looked on updates.redhat.com and the most recent kernel version
there is 2.4.20-31.9.

1. Find some more recent kernel version in RPM form. But where? And
is this compatible with the rest of my RH9 system?

2. Find a more recent kernel in source form and compile it. Ooh, scary.
Never done that before.

3. Grab an older version of ndiswrapper which might be more compatible
with my kernel. How would I know how far back to go? And, is this a
bad idea because newer versions fix bugs?

4. Just ignore the warning. Surely some people are running RH9 with
ndiswrapper...

Advice? Although I've been using this system for a while I don't really maintain it, so I won't be able to do anything too complicated on my own.

you might try using the kernel rpm for Fedora. Maybe there are people who have tried.

I would be a bit wary, tho. There are differences between 2.6 and 2.4 that could make your system unbootable unless taken care of properly - the rpm package might or might not do it.

I've only compiled a kernel from source one time and it was for red hat 9, and it was a 2.6 kernal. Its really not that difficult, if anything its boring but usually is an easy task if you find a howto.

I suggest you try doing that; because I used an older version of ndiswrapper with a 2.4.22 kernel and it worked fine. How far back to go? Sorry, I do not remember what version I used earlier. Please check out ndiswrapper's wiki. You might get a hint :)
