measure the network speed between a wifi station and access point

I want to measure the network speed (data rate) between a wifi station
and access point.
My approach is to create a UDP socket server and client on both of
them, then send data between them. UDP (instead of TCP) is chosen
because of the lower overhead.
Keep track of the time required for both transmit and receive.
Network speed (data rate)
= number of bytes transferred / time

Is this approach ok?

Could be ok - but you may get more useful info running a stateful protocol - such as TCP. The overhead is negligible - because you aren't trying to enhance performance - you are trying to measure it.

This would allow you to account for dropped packets - retransmits - etc. Other than that - let me know how it turns out - I'd like to play with it
