I think the problem is with your configuration file. If you don't mind postinng the ifcfg-ath0 file I'll take a look at it. I had the same problem with my card.

are you using encryption on your wireless network? Also you might want to change Mode=Auto to Mode=Managed. If you are not using encryption on your network don't use the iwpriv statement.

When you execute iwlist ath0 scan does it list all available routers in range? This command should show you the AP MAC address, the mode, signal strength, noise level, quality, encryption key, frequency, channel, and all available bit rates. This command will also tell you if the card is working.

Let me know what happens

Bit Rate:24Mb/s
Bit Rate:36Mb/s

i don't get the error when trying to connect, i just fails everytime...so, i guess there's progress...

Can you post the contents of tail -f /var/log/messages. I would like to see the output after you execute dhclient ath0. Also what degree is your security? WEP or WPA-PSK? If your security is WPA then you would also need a program called wpa_suplicant.

Question

Configuring a Netgear WG311T with RH EL3 - kernel 2.4.21-20.EL - d/l CVS and get a make error - my kernel .config is missing.

Much head scratching later I'm still clueless - must have come across this before but can I remember ? Anyone care to push a hint my way please ?

is your kernel source installed? if so you may have to run make config in the top level of your source directory.

Thanks - yes it was installed and I've made a config but still getting the same error

Makefile.inc:120: *** KERNELCONF: /lib/modules/2.4.21-15.EL/build/.config does not exist.. Stop.

This isn't a home-brew kernel so I can't see why it doesn't exist already.

I must be missing something pretty fundamental but I can't see what it is .....

Do these as root.

ifconfig ath0 up

iwconfig ath0 key yournetworkkeyhere
iwlist ath0 scan (this will list all access points in your broadcast area. If you can see your access point your card works.)
iwconfig ath0 ap yourapaddresshere
iwconfig ath0 channel yourbroadcastchannelhere
iwconfig ath0 essid yourssidnamehere
iwpriv ath0 authmode 2 (use this if you have a network key)

now here is what I am unsure of. This depends on your distribution. If you have Fedora/Redhat execute
dhclient ath0

if you have any other execute
dhcpcd ath0

if you tell me which distribution you are using I can show you a configuration file that willl start the network card up on boot.

By the way I got the commands from the netgear WG311 HCL entry

i've switched over to mepis linux, and i have the card up and running, but it's not quite connecting and recieving an IP address yet ... so am i missing something?
and neither the dhclient or dhcpcd commands worked ...

okay, i think i have just one last problem ... i'm running SimplyMepis 3.3.1 and I've just installed the madwifi drivers and such ... connected to my rounter and everything, but it doesn't have a "local ip" yet ... it says "unavailable." (using KWifiManager)
any ideas on how to get my IP address ... ?
and how can i get these settings to load like this after restarting ... automatically ...

I also have the above problem. It was all working fine until some point the day before yesterday, then nihil.
"Determining IP information... failed."
Using a LiveCD on the same machine works fine; using another machine works fine; iwlist works fine; ifconfig ath0 up works fine; KWifiManager shows all the right info except the IP address. Everything works except dhclient. /var/log/messages shows dhclient requesting an address and not getting any offers.

I'm having a problem with the make command. I'm very new to Linux, and am running Suse 10.0. Anyways, I get the error

"Make file.inc:131 ***kernelconf: /lib/modules/2.6.13-15.7 default/build.config does not exsist...stop."

I've been trying to get a wireless connection for two days now. I just bought a D-link 520.

Any help from you guys would be appreciated.

By the way, this is a great source of info, and a nice community.

It looks like your kernel source is not installed. It the source code is located on your installation media. If you did install the kernel source code then what I think happened was that your kernel config file was corrupted. To fix this what you will have to do is recreate the config file. This is what you need to do.

1. As root user change to the kernel source dir. (cd /usr/src/linux)
2. run make command (make oldconfig)

I am pretty sure that's all you need to do to rebuild the config file.

If the 'make oldconfig' command does not work then try 'make config' and since you are new to linux I would just take the default settings that will come up. Its a long list.

If anyone notices anything wrong with my steps please correct me.
