Madwifi Atheros - [90% Solved - Use-able]

Issue:
Ok so the problem was using OpenSuse 11.0 with my Acer5514WLMi which has an Atheros 5700EG wireless built in card.

I tried many packages and building the modules from source. Nothing worked. However I did find a package that finally worked. So here are the steps to make it work:

Solution:
a) Blacklist ath5k (experimental modules still in early stages). Add blacklist ath5k to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

b) Download and install:
i) madwifi r3725+AR5007EG-2.2 (for x64)
ii) madwifi kmp default r3725+AR5007EG_2.6.25.5_1.1-2.2@x86_64

c) Reboot (not sure why - makes me feel like I'm on Windows again).

d) YaST, Network Devices, Network Settings, and edit the settings of ath0, under the hardware tab> under module> change ath5k to ath_pci (shold be in the drop down).

e) For some spastic reason - reboot once again (more windows nostalgia).

f) Hopefully should be working with a but:

Pending Issue:
I can connect to my home wifi, but unlike my previous opensuse installations on previous laptops with previous hardware. I don't get a prompt for the wifi key. So far I have used KNetwork to tell it add network, and enter the key correctly (I say correctly because I also spent an hour mucking about because of a wrong key) and that should do the trick.

If not, please keep persisting on trying to get it to work. I nearly gav eup and was about to format and maybe try opensuse 32bit because I feel as if all 64 bit OSes are still not as smooth as we would like them to be (Open Source OSes and M$).

Have you tried using iwconfig? If you are able to get that to work, you can add those commands to rc.local

I do not use suse, but a quick search returned /etc/sysconfig/network as the directory for where network settings are stored. You should be able to edit these by hand, and there should be a section that looks something like:

BOOTPROTO='static'
BROADCAST='192.168.0.255'
DHCLIENT_SET_DOWN_LINK='yes'
IPADDR='192.168.0.1'
NETMASK='255.255.255.0'
NETWORK='192.168.0.0'
REMOTE_IPADDR=''
STARTMODE='hotplug'
UNIQUE=''
WIRELESS='yes'
WIRELESS_ESSID='my.wlan'
WIRELESS_KEY=''
WIRELESS_MODE='Ad-Hoc'
WIRELESS_NICK='wlan1'
WIRELESS_NWID=''
