Madwifi Ad-hoc working only when manually started

Dear all,

Thanks to all the posts here, I finally got my madwifi working with a DWL-G650 PCMCIA card.

However, I am still stuck on one point for which I couldn't find a post.

I'm using ad-hoc mode (to a Win2K station, I have no AP) and it works ONLY if I set the MODE parameter in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ath0 to be empty (ie. MODE=). When booting up, iwconfig ath0 shows me MODE=managed and the card didn't receive an IP address from my ICS DHCP server. I then manually change iwconfig mode ad-hoc and ifup ath0 and receive properly IP and DNS info from my DHCP server.

When I want this to happen automatically, ie. by setting MODE=ad-hoc in ifcfg-ath0, it doesn't work and I never get an IP address, even when trying to manually ifup ath0...

Does anybody have an idea where the error can be ?

Some additional info :

Contents of ifcfg-ath0

DEVICE=ath0
ONBOOT=yes
USERCTL=yes
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
WIRELESS=yes
MODE=
ESSID=myssid

Sys = RedHat 9 Kernel 2.4.20-30.9 (latest)

Output of lspci -v re this card gives :

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Unknown device 168c:0013 (rev 01)
Subsystem: Unknown device 168c:1025
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 168, IRQ 5
Memory at 10800000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Capabilities: [44] Power Management version 2

Thanks for any help.

from Madwifi FAQ:

4.12 Does ad-hoc mode work?

No. There is a know problem whereby the station becomes desynchronised from the network. Fixing it is very low on Sam's priority list, and there is nothing to stop someone else working on it if it's a problem in the driver.

Hope this helps.

Thanks but no that doesn't help. The Madwifi FAQ you refer too is outdated on some points including ad-hoc. I know it works as you long as you keep both cards on 11b rather than 11g because it works for me... it's just the auto-start part that doesn't seem to be working...
